Chicago B-Cycle Museum Campus

Attraction | "This is so cool!"

We didn't actually do this, but we saw the stations (vending machines) and thought it was a nifty idea! They have these stations where you can rent bikes. The rates are pretty standard, and you just swipe your card - OR you can sign up for a package for one to three months online.

The only negative I could see was that none of the bikes had child seats. : (

John G. Shedd Aquarium

Attraction | "Quite a place!"

John G. Shedd Aquarium Photo, Chicago, Illinois

I lived in Chicago as a little girl and visited many of its museums, but I don't think I visited the Shedd Aquarium until now.It is AZA-accredited and has quite a large collection, organized geographically - my favorite way!We went on a supposedly ''free'' day, so attendance was quite high. One could gain free admission to the upper galleries, which feature a large variety of fish and reptiles, as well as the Phillippines Coral Reef area, which had a clown fish (''Nemo'') and a good display about corals, etc. But, if you wanted to visit the Oceanarium and see the sea lions(s) and whales - and let's be honest, who doesn't want to do that? Then, you have to pay. Howeve...Read More

Walnut Room

Restaurant | "Classic Restaurant inside Marshall Fields (now Macy's)"

Quote:
I used to go to this restaurant with my mom when I was a little girl, and it hasn't changed much. There is a giant fountain in the center of the room, which changes to a Christmas Tree for the holidays - and, I think, occasionally to something else at other times of year. They did not seem to have the snowman sundaes that I remember on the children's menu, but I believe the regular menu is very much as it was years ago. I had a salad - deliciously garnished - and my husband had the chicken pot pie - one of those with a popover on top of the filling. It looked quite tasty. Our little guy had half a roll and fell asleep on the floor, and as it was a rather quiet mid-afternoon, we l...Read More

Navy Pier

Attraction | "Keep your eyes peeled for promos"

Quote:
This area has changed and grown since the late eighties when I used to frequent it. It seems the North Pier shopping mall and the Navy Pier concert hall are one venue now called ''Navy Pier'' which has a big, lit sign as you enter the promenade. There are also several ships that offer cruises from its docks. There is a really big Ferris wheel and a variety of other amusements, and they offer fireworks several times a year - and not just when you'd think! We went on such a night, as my son as enjoyed fireworks several times before. This time, the music and explosions began rather suddenly and scared him.So, after enjoying some nice fried dough, we headed for the taxi hack stand a...Read More

Star of Siam

Restaurant | "I love this place!"

Quote:
I used to go here all the time when I lived in Chicago, because it has fresh food and great prices, and it hasn't changed a bit in the *hmhmm* years since I used to frequent it.

We visited on a Saturday night (relatively early) with another couple and their ten-year-old boy, and our three-year-old. We were able to get seated right away and enjoyed a superb - and surprisingly filling - meal.

We started off with a couple orders of spring rolls. I had the chicken delight, and my husband had the chicken supreme - both very good - and Lilia had the pad thai, one of my faves!

I would definitely recommend this restaurant. Dao and Eddie have still got it!

Joe's Bar

Restaurant | "Great Place for Steelers Fans!"

Joe's Bar Photo, Chicago, Illinois
Quote:
Joe's Bar is a sports bar / live music venue. We had read that it was a good place to watch the Steelers play, and indeed, this turned out to be true. There was a front room that seemed to have a bunch of different games going, and a back room, with lots of Steelers fans. We sat on the outdoor patio, which was showing several games, including the Steelers, and which was quite pleasant on a late-September Sunday. The service was enthusiastic, if not overly attentive (just the way I like it!) We were able to watch the game and not spend too much money, so were very happy with our choice. The neighborhood is quite up-and-coming, with great, non-Magnificent Mile offerings. There was...Read More

This zoo has a really nice collection and has made a lot of improvements over the years to create naturalistic environments for the animals. There is also a caroussel and a little ''train''. My son especially liked the underwater viewing of the seal exhibit.

Four Seasons Ritz-Carlton

Hotel | "Location, Location, Location."

Quote:
This hotel is in a great location for shopping, sightseeing, and feeling like a local. (I'm pretty sure Oprah lives in the Ritz-Carlton Residences upstairs.) Personally, I would never pay the regular rates at this hotel, but with my husband being on a work trip, they get a pretty standard rate. This hotel is well-suited for Children. The American Girl store is right downstairs in Water Tower Place, and the Front Desk staff pulls out a wagon filled with dollar-store toys on arrival, if you have a child with you - a nice touch. They also gave our little boy a teddy bear with a Ritz-Carlton T-shirt when we checked out. There is a big fountain in the lobby and a playground right acro...Read More
