Throughout our travels in Alaska we saw advertising for "salmon bakes". Back in 2006 we even went to a restaurant called Phyllis’ Café & Salmon Bake, which as I recall was OK but not spectacular. The salmon bakes that you will find around the state are a throwback to the old days; a family style buffet dinner of Alaska’s bounty from sea and land. I was especially happy we were able to take in the Alaskan Salmon Bake in Fairbanks . . . on their last night of their 2010 season. It was a glorious summer night; perfect for the outdoor picnic atmosphere that is the Alaska Salmon Bake. There are a lot of picnic tables throughout a small wooded area, as well as out on the lawn between th...Read More

Gold camps were located throughout the Alaskan Interior, with several right in the Fairbanks area. The El Dorado Gold Mine tour is a history lesson n what life and work in the early 20th century was like as well as how gold is mined today in the surrounding area. Our guide was Earl, the conductor of the Tanana Valley Railroad train, taking us back to the mine and other stops along the tour route. He told stories and sang tunes throughout our time on the train. The two hour tour included a visit through a permafrost mine location where a mine worker explained what mining was like the old fashioned way by hand with a pick ax. From there we were shown how miners panned local creeks. The t...Read More

While visiting Pioneer Park in Fairbanks, you owe it to yourself to make an evening of it with the Alaska Salmon Bake followed by "The Golden Heart Revue" playing nightly at the Palace Theatre. We were lucky that we were able to work out our whirlwind two week vacation to end up back in Fairbanks on their closing night of the season. With an 8:15p show time, you will have plenty of time to take in dinner and then wander over into Gold Rush Town of Pioneer Park. (I believe earlier in the summer, they also have an early evening show so you could do the show first and then go to dinner at the Salmon Bake.)As folks began arriving in the theatre, we were treated to our piano playing host Ki...Read More

This is one of the most well known and highly regarded tours in Fairbanks; Riverboat Discovery takes you on a three hour journey into the history of Alaska’s interior providing an entertaining opportunity to experience it firsthand. We were aboard the Discovery III, a large four level paddlewheeler with ample room for several hundred guests. Fortunately for us on the beautiful fall afternoon that we took the tour, there were probably less than 100 people making for a very comfortable ride down the Chena River. The trip features live narration from inside the boat and stops along the river where there is an opportunity for others to provide information to guests. The first such stop was f...Read More

Why Fairbanks in March?

Story/Tip

Aurora Borealis 3/15/07 Photo, Fairbanks, Alaska
Quote:
OK so if you've read my reviews from this trip with any attention to detail, you've noted the reference to coming to Fairbanks in March. Sure it's cold (on one 11 day trip, it didn't get above zero degrees Fahrenheit until my last day in town) and dark (around seven or eight hours of daylight), but this city comes ALIVE in March! As much as I thoroughly enjoyed our time here this summer (or was it early fall?) . . . I simply love Love LOVE Fairbanks in March.First and foremost in my book . . . the aurora borealis, aka northern lights! This is what first brought me here in March 07 and again with friends in March 08. The crisp cold and clear night skies are perfect for viewing (and phot...Read More
