In a remote countryside setting is Ballybeg House. Set back from the R747 route, the main lodge is now licensed for civil marriages and we were very fortunate to witness a friend’s wedding at this stunning property. The white gate at the end of the driveway and a small stone sign are the only indications of the entrance to Ballybeg but these modest markers are fitting to what is a simply beautiful place. I won’t go into great detail about the catering (although I will say that it was superb) or the wedding itself as couples choose their own caterer and obviously it was a private occasion but in terms of romantic settings, this has to be one of the top places in Ireland. Our stay near Ballybeg was short. We arrived the evening before the wedding and departed the morning after. However the area is well worth a visit. It is only an hour and a half drive from Dublin airport and boasts some beautiful scenery. For serious hikers, the Wicklow Way is only two kilometres from Tinahely but there are other walks that can be done in a day and start from a trailhead at the top of Mangan’s Lane in Tinahely. For those interested in doing a day hike, stop in at Madeline’s and pick up a flyer titled ‘Walking in Tinahely’. It has a map and directions for three walks, the first is the easiest at 10km (about 2 hours), the second is 15km (3.5 hours) and the hardest is 21km (5...Read More

I am so used to scouring the Internet for accommodation pictures and information that I almost discounted the lovely Rosbane for the fact that it has almost zero presence online. It is given top billing on the Ballybeg House bed and breakfast recommendations list but I was won over by the fact that it is a mere ten minute walk from the wedding venue. We drove up to Rosbane the afternoon before the wedding and owner Mrs. Bridget Malone greeted us with tea, coffee and slices of Irish brack, a type of fruit cake that looks not unlike Christmas cake but tastes a whole lot better.Mrs. Malone has run her farmhouse as a bed and breakfast since the 1970s and seems to have hospitality d...Read More

About a five minute drive from Rosbane is the village of Tinahely. We ventured there in the hours before the wedding hoping to pick up a sandwich or something to tide us over for the afternoon. We popped our heads into the two grocery stores along the main street but were less than inspired by the bread and deli selections so continued on to the end of the road in the hopes of finding something a bit fresher and tastier. Fortunately we found Madeline’s, a decently sized café serving homemade fare. The cafe was busy for the Friday lunchtime service so we took a seat towards the back of the restaurant amongst some questionable artwork that looked to be on sale. At the very back was a large f...Read More

Looking out over a valley of mossy-coloured trees and a bright strip of golfing green is the Woodenbridge Hotel. Parked in a pretty corner of the Vale of Avoca, Woodenbridge is reportedly the oldest hotel in Ireland but had I not read it on their website, I definitely wouldn’t have guessed that it was established in 1608.Apart from one couple, the restaurant was empty when we arrived so we settled at a bar table for dinner and drinks instead. The bar steadily filled up during the course of the evening and by the time we left around 11pm all the tables had been taken. The decor somewhat belies its 400 year existence and reminded me instead of a Berni Inn circa 1985. It is a pleasant enough ...Read More
