Today is a travel day; we travel by car to the airport at Juliaca to fly to Lima where we are met by our guide and driver and transferred to our accommodation at the Hotel El Pardo close to the centre of town in the "Miraflores region" of Lima. Once again out tour company had pulled a great hotel out of the bag and this recently renovated and redecorated hotel (in the Hilton Group) was comfortable and more than adequate for our brieft stay. If you want to be active it has a swimming pool and fitness gym, but the most activity that we were going to participate in was a walk to the town centre and then a trip to a nearby restaurant.Hotel corridors were light, well decorated and bedecked with...Read More

Attraction | "A well cared for ancient adobe sacred site"

This pre Inca site is in the very heart of the Miraflores district of Lima and Huaca Pucillana was the Temple de Adoradores del Mar. Unusually the Lima civilisation did not pay homage to the sun, but saw their best bet resting with the Moon and the Sea. Nowadays it’s hard to imagine this site without the surrounding urban sprawl, but back in the day of the Limas they would have had a great view of the sea and overlooked miles and miles of open countryside. The Temple de Adoradores del Mar was indeed an oasis in its day and was recognised as an appropriate site for the Lima Culture. They established a series of ceremonial buildings between 200 and 700 AD and it was from here that they worshiped the God...Read More

Golly this is yet another early start and it’s a real shock to the system that we will be collected, by our guide, at 6.00a.m from the hotel foyer. That means breakfast at 5.15! Still we knew this was a busy schedule and we are almost four hours away from Nazca,so we dig deep into our resources and aim for an early night. My body clock is now totally disorientated and I reckon it’s only the adrenalin produced by the excitement of this holiday that’s keeping me going. The next morning we set off and despite tiredness enjoy the long journey to the airport at Ica. I’m really excited about this part of the holiday (well it’s yet another highlight) but my wife is less enthusiastic. ...Read More

Attraction | "An oasis of calm and a fascinating museum"

The visit to the Regional Museum of Ica (Adolfo Bermudez Jenkins) is well worth a visit and as it costs only 20 sols it represents extremely good value for money. In a small area it showed the history of the Wari and other pre Nazca tribes by their pottery. Much of this was in exceptional condition and it was interesting to note that the animals depicted on the Nazca Lines were all shown on the contemporary pottery of the time. Much of the pottery was intact and the glaze looked as good as I imagine it was when it was first made. Indeed I checked out with our guide that this was all original pottery as there were few obvious repairs and it seemed as if it had only just been crafted. I was assured that...Read More

Restaurant | "A great new restaurant to try"

Audley, our Travel Company, had "almost recommended" this restaurant in the brochure of our itinerary by saying "we have recently been recommended Panchita, offering a large grill, fish dishes and good vegetarian options." They went on to say that it was possible to "order one dish to share as portions are huge". Now I can confirm that everything they said about this place is 100% true. We’d read about other recommended restaurants, but when we discovered that this one was only a 5 minute walk away from the hotel we decided that we’d give it a whirl. What a coup! This place is brilliant! Initially it was a bit difficult to find because in daylight it just looks like an office entrance, but ...Read More
