Hotel | "A very nice country masia four kilometres from Figueres"

Mas Pau is a 4 star hotel four kilometres south-west of Figueres, in the Costa Brava region of Spain. The town was made famous by one great surrealist artist – Mr Salvador Dali. Over the years the hotel has grown in popularity with young people getting married; holding their wedding receptions in the main banqueting room and making good use of the spacious rooms and tranquil gardens on offer. No need to worry even if you turn up during a special occasion like this you will still receive good personal service and the staff will go out of their way to make you feel at home and relaxed. The hotel building is a 17th century masia – a very posh Spanish farmhouse and stands on its own in a wo...Read More

Hotel | "A stylish villa with lovely gardens and St Bernard Dogs"

Quote:
Hotel Sant Bernat is a country hotel that can be located when you turn off the long winding road from Tona leading to Montseny in north-east Spain. Before you reach this 50s looking building hidden amongst the dense forest of the very green Montseny Sierra, you will have to follow the tiny track from the main road.It is impossible to miss this stylish villa because its terracotta roof tiles stand out amongst all the greenery. Draping over the front façade of the building are uncontrollable vines which gives the hotel exterior a sleepy, timeless quality. In front of the hotel stands a beautiful willow tree and pond filled with reeds and irises, a stone terrace and gurgling fount...Read More

Attraction | "The best Romanesque carvings I've come across yet!"

Ripoll, in the Costa Brava region of Spain is somewhere I visited over twenty years ago and I have just been back to this part of Spain for ten days to visit the places I fell in love with all those years ago. The town has changed drastically and not really for the better but it still has some of the regions best preserved Romanesque carvings. The monastery church of Santa Maria was one of my favourite buildings in Ripoll and its good to see that it still has the most beautiful of all Romanesque carvings on its porch wall, which is protected by glass. Scenes from the Old and New testaments are described and their characters portrayed along its whole length. It helps to understand that this ...Read More

Finding a room for a night in the month of September on the Costa Brava can sometimes be a bit difficult and I don’t always want to stay in Barcelona even if I am very fond of the city. As you know I love to wander off the beaten track when travelling in Spain and I was so pleased that we decided to do just this when we visited the town of Vic. Fourteen kilometres east of Vic we stumbled across one of the greyest buildings I have come across in this part of the world. Perched on its own on a high mountainside (Guillerias mountains) overlooking a great expanse of water, Sau reservoir, the Parador do Tourismo is a haunting stone building. It was built about 38 years ago in the supposed style of a Catal...Read More

Attraction | "A small town with a big Catalan heart"

If you look at the Costa Brava region on a map of Spain it looks quite small but what you have to take into consideration when touring the region is that the coastline which is filled with small bays, islets, capes and headlands is actually around 200 miles long. A car is a good thing to have, a motor-bike even better, when visiting this region. Be prepared for the length of journeys from one town to the next - they may look next to each other but remember they take longer to reach than you think because of the way the roads plunge inland from the coast and back again. It is an exhilarating drive but can be a tiring one. Still, it's worth the effort especially driving from north to south. ...Read More
