A large percentage of visitors to Switzerland will use the Swiss trains to see around this beautiful country rather than hiring a car. The guide books are full of praise for the Swiss transport system, its efficiency and its wide ranging connections. The difficultly sometimes however is choosing the right swiss train pass, and I know we deliberated over this for sometime, before purchasing a 15 day swiss pass. This was the first time we had ever relied solely on train to tour a country. Here are some tips about travelling in Switzerland by train. 1. Before you leave home, print off some train timetables from the SBB website, which will give you lists of possible connection...Read More

Quote:
On our holiday to Switzerland and Italy this summer, as usual I had booked all of our accommodation in advance. We flew into Geneva and planned to spend the first couple of days in the city and surrounding area. Now on this holiday, due to the wonderful accounts we heard via others and vai our own travel books, we decided to use the train for our entire holiday, so because of this, we needed to find accommodation that was within walking distance of the train station. The main train station in Geneva city centre is Geneve Cornavin, and in my research of hotels, I came across the Hotel Ibis, which was a short walk from the station. Now, we had never stayed in an Ibis hotel prior to this ...Read More

Like many who visit Switzerland, we travelled by train, and due to this we invested in a Swiss pass, which gave us free train and bus travel throughout Switzerland, as well as other reductions on cable cars, funiculars etc. As well as free transport on trains and buses, the swiss pass also offers many free boat cruises. One of these that we took advantage of, was the CNG one hour boat cruise on Lake Geneva. All you have to do is show a valid swiss pass and you get on free of charge. Of course, you can pay for the cruise as well, if you do not have a swiss pass. There are two main areas to board the boat in Geneva, both of which are very close together: the Quai du Mont Blanc or the Ja...Read More

On our holiday around Switzerland and Italy this summer, we tried to book hotels to stay in for a couple of days and use it as a base to explore a particular area. We were wanting to stay around the Interlaken area and see the Eiger and Jungfraujoch, and I almost booked a hotel in Interlaken, when I came across the website for this wonderful chalet in the car free town of Murren, up in the mountains aboute Lauterbrunnen, not far from the Interlaken area. This chalet is run by an English lady called Denise, and it really is her, alongside the wonderful lodgings that make this the perfect place to stay. There are only a handful of rooms in the chalet, alongside an apartment which you can...Read More

When looking to book somewhere in Zermatt to stay for a couple of nights, I kept hitting brick walls. Zermatt is busy in both teh winter and summer season, but it is the price that is the crippling thing in this car free town. We wanted somewhere clean, comfortable that offered breakfast, all at a reasonable price...asking too much?? Well I spent quite a while hunting, before I finally decided upon Le Petit Hotel, which was one of the more affordable hotels that I could find, that offered breakfast. We paid 280 CHF for 2 nights, which was pretty good for Zermatt in one of its peak summer months. When we arrived in Zermatt, it was an extremely hot day, and we were rather env...Read More

On the last night of our holiday, we wanted to stay somewhere close to airport since our flight was early the next morning from Geneva airport. There was little point in paying extra for a hotel with breakfast, as the chances were that we wouldn't get to eat it anyway, as we needed to be at the airport for 5.30 a.m.. With this in mind, we opted for the Ibis airport hotel, which didn't include breakfast (although it was available to buy if you were leaving later in the morning) and was a reasonable price albeit by Swiss standards, around £70. We were coming from Zurich and so it was easier to get the train to the airport in Geneva, and then call for the hotel shuttle bus to collect us there...Read More

La Maison du Gruyere is the one (or rather one of the homes) of the famous Swiss cheese Gruyere. We thought that it wouldn't be right, to come to Switzerland and not at least visit either a chocolate or cheese factory, two of their big exports. Due to limited time in the area, we only managed to get to the Maison du Gruyere (there is a Callier Chocolate Factory in nearby Broc) but we were pleased that we had. We took the train from Geneva to Palezieux, where there is theh a little red train that then transports you to right opposite the cheese factory, albeit with quite a few stops along the way. The old twon of Gruyere itself is a short, but steep walk about the hill, starting from L...Read More

If you visit Switzerland and stay anywhere along the shores of Lake Geneva, you would be well advised to take the time to visit the Chateau de Chillon, just outside the Swiss riviera town of Montreux. You may not be interested in history, and you don't need to be, to appreciate the beauty of this castle's location, jutting out of the lakeshore, as well as the preservation of this historic site. There are several ways of getting to the Chateau. You can arrive by car, by boat or by bus. Various boats will take you across the shores of Lake Geneva and give you a wonderful approach to the castle. If you are coming from Geneva, like we were, you can get the train to Montreux station and take ei...Read More

There are 2 main attractions in Gruyere - La Maison du Gruyere (the Gruyere cheese factory/fromagerie) and the Chateau de Gruyeres. If you wish to do both attractions in the one day, it is worthwhile purchasing a joint ticket for 13.50 CHF each, which will then allow you into both. This is a reduced ticket, and very good value in an expensive country like Switzerland. The gruyere cheese factory is at the bottom of the hill, outside of the actual town of Gruyere, opposite the train station. The path that takes you up to the car free town of Gruyere starts off at the bottom of the hill beside the station. Switzerland is expensive without question and unless money isn't an issue, you will probably find that you cannot visit everything you may want to whilst there, if you want to stick to a budget. We had planned to visit the Jungfrau whilst staying in Murren, and we knew this was going to be very very expensive, but in the end our planned took a little change. Our host in the chalet we stayed at in Murren actually directed us toward the Schilthorn, rather than the Jungfrau. THe Jungfraujoch may be the highest train station in Europe, but it is apparently crammed full of tourists all fighting for the views. The Schilthorn on the other hand is the lesser known and quieter of the viewpoints...Read More

When we were planning our holiday to Switzerland this year, we had planned to stay in the car free town of Wengen, on the other side of the valley from Murren, which would in deed be closer to the very famous and much visited attraction of the Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe, bringing you to the 'Top of Europe' as it is widely advertised as. What made us stay in Murren however were the reviews of a fabulous little chalet (Chalet Fontana) in Murren, which was very reasonable value in a very expensive country like Switzerland. We were travelling by train, so getting to Murren wasn't particulalry troublesome for us, in terms of finding the right place to leave your car. Th...Read More

Most people who visit Murren in the summer time, will visit Allmendhubel, mostly for its views, walks or restaurant. On the upper road in the little town of Murren, you are able to take the Allmendhubel bahn (the funicular railway) that will take you up to Allmendhubel. Allmendhubel is 1907m high travelling from Murren, and the funicular only takes 4 minutes. Now, Allmendhubel is more like an area, rather than an actual place. At the top of the funicular station, there is a large children's play area, as well as a popular restaurant. In the winter time, Allmendhubel offers children's ski and sledging opportunities, but in the summer season, it is either the starting point for many wal...Read More

There are many great things about Murren, one being that there are numerous restaurants to choose from, and another being that nearly everywhere in town offers spectacular views of the swiss mountains towering high above. The restaurants do however vary greatly in price, and there is nothing cheap in Switzerland. You can however, get a reasonably priced meal from around 18CHF to 20CHF each in some restaurants, one of these being the restaurant of the Hotel Edelweiss, which is only a short walk from the train station. There is both indoor and outdoor seating in the Hotel Edelweiss, and it is partly self service and partly full service. We sat outside, since the weather was so ...Read More

Whilst visiting La Maison du Gruyere we decided to stop at their restaurant once we were finished our tour for a spot of lunch before heading up the steep hill to the town of Gruyere. The restaurant itself is just to the right of the admission desk, and is a well designed restaurant, with both indoor and outdoor seating for up to 250 people and a children's play area just outside. This restaurant attempts to combine gruyere throughout the menu, and offers group menu's and banquets as well as a normal menu. Prices are reasonable with main meals around 20 CHF. You dont of course have to have a main meal, and rather you could simply enjoy some of soup or cold platters (both wit...Read More

When we stayed in Murren this summer, a car free town perched hihg up in the mountains, we had ample of restaurants to choose from. Some of course were rather more expensive than others, and since we were sticking to a budget, we tried to economise where possible, and choose those restaurants that offered main meals around the 20 CHF mark. On the first night of our stay, we ate in the Hotel Alpina restaurant, which is just around the corner from the BLM train station and is one of the first restaurants that you meet once you turn the sharp bend after the station, walking along the lower path. We stayed in Zermatt for two nights and were spoilt for choice in terms of eateries close at hand. In saying that however, many of the eateries charge eat watering prices for rather basic food, so you do need to look around if you are trying to stick to any sort of budget. We relied heaviily of our guide books for suggestions of places to go that may be in our price range, which already eliminated about half of the restaurants in Zermatt. To give you an idea of prices, one top hotel was offering a BBQ meal/evening for well over 55CHF per person. We were looking to keep an evening meal dish to around 20 - 25 CHF per person, already expensive for the basic food that was on offer in many o...Read More

Most people will be familiar with the Matterhorn mountain, they may not know that is what it is called, but will probably recognise the shape of the mountain, making it rather difficult to scale. There are various ways to get a good look at the Matterhorn without scaling it (we thought we would leave that for another day!) In fact there are three main destinations to travel to, near the car free town of Zermatt that will give you some impressive views. It all depends however, on time, budget and what you want to see and do. When we visited Lake Lugano this summer as part of our holiday around Swizterland and north Italy, we didn't actually stay in Lugano itself. Our hotel was actually situated in the a suburb of Lugano called Paradiso, which is actually about a 15 walk around the promenade from Lugano. Apart from being very preety itself in terms of views over the Lake, staying in Paradiso also has the advantage that the funicular that takes visitors up Monte San Salvatore is actually based in this suburb, and only a 5 minute walk from our hotel in Paradiso. Whilst we were staying in the Lugano area in the south of Switzerland, one of the activities that we did was to go on a boat trip around some of Lake Lugano. With our trusty swiss pass in hand, we were able to get on this boat trip completely free of charge, and in actual fact did the trip twice whilst we were there - firstly to relax on the boat for the one hour cruise, and then the next time, we got off and on the boat to visit the beautiful town of Gandria.
