Hotel | "A Night's Rest at Days Inn"

Last fall, Himself and Yours Truly undertook a cross-country car trip to transport a small trailer-load of personal belongings to our daughter’s home in New Mexico. Our itinerary took us from the East Coast to the American Southwest, a journey of some 2000 miles. Our third (and last) night on the road was spent just off Interstate 40 at the Days Inn in Clinton, Oklahoma.

Like so many roadside lodgings, the Days Inn at Clinton caters largely to travelers who leave the highway for a night’s rest. For most guests, it’s not a destination unto itself. Himself and Yours Truly are accustomed to dealing with this sort of accommodation, and we don’t expect much—just clean and comfortable. Days Inn at Clinton delivered admirably on these expectations, starting with check-in, which took no more than 2 or 3 minutes to present identification and credit card. Out interaction was staff was limited, but it was always positive and pleasant.

In many ways, this hotel is typical for its genre. It has a functional lobby that people rarely use, exterior corridors, an outdoor pool, a basic exercise room, and guest laundry. All in all, the décor was not memorable, though the comfortable facilities were. Our room had a king bed, medium-sized television with cable, plus the usual hair dryer, iron and ironing board, coffee station, desk and dresser, free Wi-Fi, fridge, and microwave. On the other hand, the reclining chair in the room was not standard, and it was a welcome find as we settled in for the night. Even more welcome was the upgrade bathroom with its whirlpool bath—a real treat after many hours on the road.

For the business traveler, which decidedly did not include us, the hotel has meeting rooms, banquet rooms, and business services—none of which we needed or paid much attention to.

The Days Inn in Clinton has an on-premises restaurant, but it does not offer traditional room service. On the other hand, the restaurant will deliver to individual rooms—the difference being that meals arrive in carryout boxes with plastic utensils rather than on a tray with dinnerware and metal utensils. We found that we could survive happily with such a compromise, especially as it meant that we didn’t have to freshen up enough to go out in search of an evening meal.

After a relaxed evening and a refreshing night’s sleep, we were on our way again. Checkout was even less painless than check-in, with our receipt slipped under our door while we still slept. Would we stay here again? Darn right! This was one of those hotel stays for which we took away only good memories and gratitude.
