THE BEACH. Need I say more? OK, the beach in summer. That’s what vacations have been about for generations. Ocean City can be "laid back," and exciting at the same time. With 10 miles of beautiful beach and a 3-mile boardwalk, Ocean City has an enduring appeal for all ages.

The Beach at 136th Street
We went to the beach every day, of course. Nice beach, not too crowded. We played a lot of mini-golf. If you have children, don’t miss Frontier Town. It is a small Wild West Theme park where you get to interact with the characters. Our train was held-up by robbers and so was our stage coach. Things were a little too realistic for my four year old, but everyone else enjoyed it. We spent a few nights walking on the boardwalk and eating junk food. My favorite is Dolle’s caramel corn. Others in my family love Thrasher’s boardwalk fries, funnel cakes, and ice cream cones. One night my husband and I ate at Phillips Seafood Restaurant. I highly recommend it. We drove up to Delaware to do some tax-free shopping, and sat on the back porch of the new Dunes Manor Hotel (right on the beach) and had coffee and dessert. The Castle in the Sand has a weekly Murder Mystery Dinner on Thursdays. My husband and sixteen year old daughter went to that and enjoyed it. One night we took barbequed ribs and fresh corn on the cob down to the beach and had a picnic dinner.

Quick Tips:

A long-standing Ocean City tradition is "Beach Week" for graduating high school seniors. If you want to avoid the "party atmosphere" of the city at this time, do not plan a visit during the first three weeks of June. Unlike the beaches in some neighboring states, Ocean City does not charge "admission" in the form of beach tags. The grocery stores in the area are a little primitive.

Best Way To Get Around:

Traffic can be bad this time of year because the year-round population of approximately 6,000 skyrockets to more than 300,000 every summer. The public bus is a good option because it only costs to ride all day.

Frontier Town

If you have children, don’t miss Frontier Town, a replica western town circa 1860. It is a small Wild West Theme park where you get to interact with the characters, so dress up to play your part! Set on 38 acres of woodlands in West Ocean City, Maryland, The Wild West Show is situated alongside Frontier Town Campground. As you enter the town, you are transported back to the year 1860. The bank gets held up in the morning, "Lopez" is put on trial, and there is a jail break in the afternoon. Indians "live" in the Indian Village and perform ceremonial dances throughout the day. This is a real Indian family and the father has been a part of Frontier Town since he was a child. Our train was held-up by robbers and so was our stage coach. Things were a little too realistic for my four year old, but everyone else enjoyed it. You’ll enjoy stage coach rides, steam train rides, pony rides, can can shows, face painting by the Indians, gun fights, an American bison exhibit, paddle boats, "pannin' fer gold" and plenty of shops and eateries.
