The Hot/Cold Divide

October 25th was always a happy day for the people of Hedong district in Tianjin. It was the day the heating for the whole district was turned on. Apparently – according to the local government - any day before that date is 'hot' and all those after are 'cold'. In most apartment blocks in northern China, the residents have no choice over when they can use their central heating and they are unable to regulate the temperature at which it operates. Everyone just pays the same bill once a year for their winter heat. I am not 100% why China uses this less than efficient system. Some locals venture that it is because the majority of apartments have antiquated heating systems that are not sophist...Read More

Stuck to the dashboard on the passenger side of every taxi in Shanghai was a sticker with a telephone number. This was the number passengers could call if they wanted to complain about their driver going too fast or taking a roundabout route to their destination. This was quite possibly the most pointless notice anywhere in China. The first reason for this was the language barrier. The sticker was in both Chinese and English, but the operators on the end of the line spoke only Chinese. The second reason was that the operators view of what constituted safe driving differed massively from what most foreigners would consider anything remotely close to safe. To illustrate this, let me tell you a story of ...Read More

If you have read any of my previous journals about the four years I spent living, working and traveling in China, you will probably have noticed that I like the occasional beer and have been known to frequent several bars around the Middle Kingdom. In fact, nothing defines my time in China better than the image of a green bottle of Tsingtao beer. By far my favorite bar in China was Ali Babas in Tianjin, a small expat joint that was always full to bursting and sold cold brews for a very reasonable 8rmb. I also enjoyed plenty of fantastic evenings in The Den in Beijing drinking a cold draft and watching sport on one of the many big screen TVs. On other occasions, I even managed to find some lively haunt...Read More

This journal is not as much about Shanghai itself as it is about the disparity between Shanghai and many of the other cities around China. I first moved to China in 2006 and lived there until the start of 2010. For outsiders it is truly impossible to gauge exactly how much China changed in that period. The speed of growth and development has been truly astounding and compares with nothing else on Earth. As the country's major financial centre, naturally, Shanghai has seen plenty of this growth. The building of the World Financial Centre and the staging of the 2010 EXPO are fantastic examples of this. However, it is not Shanghai that has enjoyed the most dramatic of changes, it is the rest of China, th...Read More

I first visited Shanghai in 2005. And, I loved it. However, in truth, I was extremely lucky to actually even get there. I had been working in Korea for the previous year. When my contract at the school in which I was teaching expired on September 24th, I decided it was time to leave. Before I departed, my friend and Alana decided that we had time for a bit of a jaunt across the Yellow Sea. So, we took the 28 hour ferry ride from Inchon in Korea to Tianjin in China. Our plan was to arrive in Tianjin and then head to straight to Beijing, from where we would explore the east coast of China. The first part of this plan went without a hitch, and we made Beijing about five hours after landing in Tianjin. We...Read More
