The two most wonderful words which every traveller loves to hear are surely those that make up the magical expression ‘free upgrade’. Admittedly there’s a world of difference between a free upgrade in a swanky hotel or on a long haul flight and a free upgrade at the Travellodge or on a European flight but nonetheless, hear those two words and your spirits will almost certainly leap and that’s what they did on my first visit to a new hotel. I arrived at the Courtyard in Bremen at about 10pm at night. Most good upgrades come from late arrivals – mind you most "Sorry madam we gave your room to a tramp and you’ll have to transfer to the other side of town to sleep in a cardboard box" experienc...Read More

After nearly 20 years of business trips to Germany I’ve developed a theory that somewhere in the country there’s an office – probably in the Bundesgesundheitsministerium (state health ministry) that spends its time issuing edicts that all hotel bathrooms – and the toilets in many offices and airports too – must have black and white checker-board tiled floors. It’s like the entire country has undergone a collective surgical removal of bathroom design imagination. Stepping into my bathroom at the Courtyard I almost yelped with delight at the gorgeous big brown floor tiles and the equally impressive gingery ones on the walls. The only thing overwhelming me more than the absence of chess-board flooring wa...Read More

During a recent visit to Bremen I volunteered to take an Italian colleague for dinner. She’d only been to the city once before and I felt rather obliged to make sure that she saw something of the lovely old city centre, forgetting in the process that she’s actually rather hard work as a dinner companion. I didn’t feel I could get away with my usual stunt of going to the restaurant in the Ubersee Museum where I usually polish off a massive bowl of pasta – that wasn’t going to wash with an Italian who (according to one of my colleagues) is a bit of a foodie. So I put her on the tram and we jumped off near the cathedral to consider our options. There’s really never much point asking someone wh...Read More

The Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Airline

I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that I fly a lot. I can't think of a European airline I haven't used at some time or another, most of them more often than I might like. So I was intrigued when I learned the only direct way to get from Brussels to Bremen was by using an airline called OLT which stands for Ostfriesische Lufttransport – or East Friesian Air transport. I had heard about them from many of my colleagues who all told me that flying OLT was 'a little bit special' and out of the ordinary. They were right.~OLT – The Titchy Plane Company~OLT started life in the 1950s as a sort of 'air taxi' service taking tourists and business people on flights to the Fri...Read More

In June the sun was still shining and the World Cup was in full flow. On the day of the final group stage game for England I was in Bremen. Much to my chagrin I'd missed the England game due to being stuck at a factory near Bremen where phones, radios and any kind of communication with the outside world were all forbidden. It took me ages to find out we were safely (though rather pathetically) through to the final 16 and Germany would be playing the game to determine who we'd face in the next round on the same evening. Returning to the city with my colleague Iris we were a little concerned that it might not be wise to go out for dinner in Bremen when the national team were playing a crucial match. The...Read More
