"Kaffistova" was a recommendation in our "Berlitz Guide to Oslo". It was listed as a cheaper option, a fact that appealed to us immensely. I’m usually willing to splash out on good food, but Oslo is so expensive (by British standards) that even a sandwich can easily cost you about £9.00. Kaffistova is a cafeteria style restaurant in that the food is pre-cooked and kept warm in glass counters; on my travels in the former Soviet Union this proved to be an excellent arrangement on many occasions, when my Russian language skills fell short of the required standard. In Norway this isn’t really an issue because restaurant staff all speak perfect English; what’s more, at Kaffistova, hanging above...Read More

There’s no getting away from the fact that eating out in Norway is very costly. Even a simple wrap for a quick fix lunch will set you back about £8.00. In Scandinavia we’ve often found that "ethnic" restaurants tend to be slightly cheaper, and eating vegetarian dishes will save you a bit more; as fans of Indian food, this is something we are always happy to do. There are numerous Indian restaurants in Oslo and we chose one in the Grunnerlokka district just to the north of the centre. We didn’t have a reservation but were able to get a table for two on a Saturday night. The restaurant was reasonably busy but we were placed in a corner and felt a little cut off from the rest of the restauran...Read More

The magnificent ski jump at Holmenkollen is one of Oslo’s most popular tourist attractions. Even in snow-free July, and in spite of major renovations taking place, the complex was teaming with visitors; some were Norwegians who had come by private car, others had come in coaches, stopping off on an organised tour, and others still, like us, had made the journey from central Oslo by bus. The ski jump is visible from the city although it is a thirty minute trip from the centre of the Norwegian capital. I am an avid spectator of winter sports so I was excited at the prospect of visiting Holmenkollen; as well as the ski jump, there’s a museum devoted to the history of winter sports in Norway a...Read More

As a schoolchild I was really interested in the Second World War but even in GCSE history attention was focused on the Nazis and we covered relatively little on the war in the Far East, in North Africa and even on the Russian Front; the war in Scandinavia featured even less. In the intervening years my knowledge of the war in a wider context has grown considerably so I was very interested in visiting the Museum of the Norwegian Resistance when I visited Oslo recently. In a nutshell the museum documents the efforts of the Norwegian people, both civilian and military, against their German occupiers (although the Norwegian name for the museum gives the impression that it covers only the civilian resistan...Read More

Visiting the Edvard Munch Museum was one of the things I most wanted to do in Oslo. I've long been interested in the work of the Norwegian expressionist artist but this fascination came about after viewing his painting "Sickness" in London rather than "The Scream", arguably his best known work. When Munch died he left his catalogue of paintings, drawings and prints to the City of Oslo and a large number of them are presented here in this fine museum. I'd be hard pressed to name any other Norwegian artists but there can be few people who have never seen the horror stricken subject of "The Scream". It's an image that has been used in countless situations, appearing on t-shirts, shopping bags...Read More

Having enjoyed immensely our introduction to Eritrean food at a restaurant in Geneva we were delighted to spot a similar restaurant near our accommodation in Oslo. From the outside the place didn’t look particularly appealing but we usually look past the exterior and focus on the food more than the décor. Fortunately things do improve considerably once you get inside and when the food comes you are in no doubt at all that this is a quality restaurant. The interior is actually rather smart and sleek with statement wallpaper and dazzling modern chandeliers. There’s even a more secluded area that owes much to the idea of nightclub VIP areas with sexy armchairs and tables in cosy booths. Unfo...Read More

During a trip to Geneva earlier this year, I was impressed to find that many of the streets which bear the names of famous or important people, have a brief explanation under the street name sign of who the person was or mentioned some notable achievement of theirs. But in Oslo, no such introduction was required: Norway seems to have had an abundance of over achievers of the last couple of centuries and most of them have earned themselves an eternal commemoration on the map. For me, a couple of those names stand out in particular: Roald Amundsen, Fridtjof Nansen and Thor Heyerdahl. Of course, they aren’t just commemorated in street names. Three museums on the Bydgoy peninsular, a short bo...Read More

Even among those who have never visited Norway, there is a general awareness of the fact that, for British people at least, it’s a very expensive country. Indeed, the 25 per cent tax rate that is applied to almost everything (and things such as alcohol are even more heavily taxed) in combination with the exchange rate make it one of Europe’s most costly destinations. Accommodation is no exception and having nabbed some bargain flights to Oslo Rygge with Ryanair, we set about the task of finding the cheapest accommodation we could, without compromising too much on location. After much research we chose Anker Hostel which is situated about ten minutes walk from Oslo’s bus and train stations ...Read More
