Quote: It's another summer weekend getaway in amazing Alabama. This time, I've headed to the middle of the state to visit the areas of Pelham and Vestavia to search for more new adventures.

The Mountaintop Community Church is situated on a mountain in the middle of Vestavia Hills, a suburb of Birmingham, and not too far from Pelham. It's a contemporary nondemonination church on Centerville Drive, but I didn't attend any of their services. During my stay in Pelham, there was a Tae Kwon Do tournament that was happening across the street on the more sloped part of the mountain. Why I really came to the Mountaintop was to see the view. It's the best views of Vestavia Hills from the top building's parking lot. It looked like something from a picture taken in New England with the massive forests and mountains, and in the distance you can see an old white chuch steeple. In Louisiana, yo...Read More

Holiday Inn Express

Hotel | "Great Location Hotel"

Holiday Inn Express Photo, Pelham, Alabama
Quote:
Of the many hotels on Cahaba Valley Road, the Holiday Inn Express - Pelham has a great location on the street - it's in the middle of all the eating places, and is not too far from a CVS, Walgreens, and WalMart. You are in walking distance to Krystal Burger and the Margarita Grill, and have a great view of the mountains surrounding this little town. The hotel offers free parking in a decent-sized parking lot, has a complimentary breakfast that ends at 9am, an indoor heated pool, and has free wireless internet access. There are also brochures of area attractions of Pelham and Birmingham. The rooms are decent with a small closet, an armoire, queen-sized beds, a huge bathroom, and a comfy...Read More

Margarita Grill

Restaurant | "Best Mexican Restaurant in Pelham"

The Margarita Grill is one of the best Mexican restaurants we found on Cahaba Valley Road in Pelham, Alabama. You can easily recognize it by its bright orange and yellow colors, and the margarita glasses on the exterior. You can choose to sit outside under a covered patio, or inside unique dining rooms. The dining rooms have strings of bright colored lights of green, red, blue, and yellow that light up the room. Paintings of margarita glasses and bright, colorful flowers are hung in the rooms. When you enter the entry hall, there are colorful frog metal sculptures that are climbing the wall. They make for a great photo opportunity. The menu varies with delicious Mexican food such as ...Read More

Dairy Queen

Restaurant | "My First Blizzard"

Since there's not a Dairy Queen where I live, I had to check this place out, and try my first Blizzard. I've seen the numerous commercials with the big, talking mouth, and the family of four chasing the DQ truck and wishing them "Happy 25th Birthday!". I just thought this place was an ordinary ice cream and smoothie shop. I was not expecting it to also be a tasty fast-food place as well. They had an abundance of burgers, sandwiches, and fries. So, after eating a burger and fries, it was time for my first Blizzard. I chose a Strawberry Cheesecake Blizzard that had small pieces of cheesecake in a cup. It was pretty good, and a cool treat (quite literally). Now, I wish there was one near my hom...Read More

Pelham Civic Complex

Attraction | "Ice Skating Arena"

Quote:
The indoor Ice Arena at the Pelham Civic Complex is a perfect place to cool down in the summer. Actually, it's really too cold and I recommend bundling up before you check out this local "hot spot". Admission is about seven dollars, and nine for those who want to skate for three hours. The time periods are from 4pm to 6pm, and 7pm to 10pm. It's tucked away off Cahaba Valley Road on Oak Mountain Road, except you take a right near this log cabin and follow the path to a building across from a baseball field. It may not look like much from the street, but the must-see factor is inside: the NFL-sized rink. I, among several others, was brave enough to test my ice-skating abilities. Luckily, I didn'...Read More

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store

Restaurant | "Old Country Food and Breakfast"

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store Photo, Pelham, Alabama
Quote:
Cracker Barrel is part country general store, and part restaurant that has old time pictures, a working fireplace, and a place to play checkers. The front porch was one of my favorite places in the restaurant because you could sit in the wooden rocking chairs and look at the towering mountains over the city. What I also noticed is that the parking lot is a bit small, and fills up fast on a Sunday morning. There's also signs that mention that the parking lot is under surveillance, and to not leave your belongings in your car. The food there is reasonably priced, and has a selection of salads, breakfast foods, and sandwiches. My second favorite part of the restaurant was the country sto...Read More
