I remember when the Village hotels in Bromborough and Warrington both opened, back in the 1990s and they were thought to be a bit 'special'. I'd stayed in both many years ago but it was only recently that I went back to the Bromborough Village, making two overnight stays within a fortnight. The last time I had been was with a Canadian colleague who had moaned about just about everything the hotel had to offer. "Did they have Pepsi or Coke in the minibars", he demanded and then nearly exploded when learning they had no minibars. "This elevator is too small" he said, and when I pointed out we had plenty of room he said "not for a gurney and a paramedic crew!" The next morning he almost went apoplectic w...Read More

Hotel | "Not the Hotel it Used to Be"

I used to live about 5 miles from this hotel and regularly visited the cinema next door which has sadly been closed. At that time - in the early 1990s - Salford Quays was going through a 'boom' and becoming the North West's answer to London's Docklands. The gentrification of the old Manchester Ship Canal docks was an inspirational example of 1990s yuppification and the Copthorne was a 'hot' property - parked as it is, right in prime position on the water side. Despite being called the Copthorne Manchester, it is of course in Salford, an entirely different city (or so the locals like to remind us).I even considered the Copthorne as a possible wedding night venue when I got married nearly 9 ...Read More

It's relatively rare that I stay in a hotel for business and am so impressed that I want to go back and spend my own time and money staying there again. I have used the Marriott Worsley Park and Country Club for both business and pleasure and I recommend it highly. A few years ago, my husband and I booked a weekend deal through one of Marriott's adverts in the national press. I think we paid about £29.99 per person per night and stayed for two nights (i.e. a shade under £120 for room and giant breakfasts). Also staying at the hotel that weekend were Portsmouth football team who were playing at Manchester United on the Saturday. We both loved the hotel and would go back in a flas...Read More

For those not so familiar with Yorkshire geography, Bingley is a real place and not just half of the Bradford and Bingley bank. It's located just to the north west of Bradford, nestled amongst some really pretty hilly scenery. To be fair, I couldn't have told you precisely where it was until I stayed there recently when visiting a factory in Bradford, about a 15 minute drive away. The hotel is just off a dual carriageway and was fairly quiet considering how close the road was.My first impressions on pulling into the car park were quite positive; the main hotel building really does look like a slightly spooky grand gothic castle, complete with a turret. Then I noticed the mish-mash of ill-m...Read More

Hotel | "I Loved Every Moment"

I have very clear memories of staying at the V&A and I could tell the precise date I was there - despite it being more than 12 years ago. Why? This is the hotel where my husband and I stayed on our wedding day. We cut a lot of costs on other aspects of the wedding because didn't have an expensive reception in a hotel so we were willing to spend a bit more on finding a nice place to run away to when all the fuss was over. We visited a large number of hotels in the Manchester area before we got to the V&A but as soon as we saw it, I knew this was the one.At that time it wasn't part of the Marriott chain - I think it was actually owned by the Granada television company who had their s...Read More
