Quote: A three day weekend in Williamsburg (again) with my two sisters. Unfortunately, it was just too darn hot (and humid) to do much of anything outside.

Another sisters' weekend in Williamsburg found us again staying at the Powhatan Plantation Resort. My sister again was able to secure a private rental here for a decent price. This resort is one that is currently under renovation and from what I've read in the timeshare forums, it has been a bit piecemeal and at this point remains incomplete. The unit that we had was the upper which meant no jacuzzi hot tub and a different layout from what we had back in May 2009. There was a nice sized deck off the living room, however. I have to say, while the accommodations were adequate for the three of us, they just didn't seem to be a nice as what we had before. As a two bedroom unit, t...Read More

OK so it's Friday night in Williamsburg, so of course it is "fish fry" Friday for me even if I'm not home in Milwaukee. I was looking forward to one of my local faves in Shackleford's II even though I did just receive a message from Restaurant.com that they were no longer participating in their dining program and my gift certificate would need to be exchanged for something else. (I traded it in for something in Milwaukee.) We were still looking forward to dinner at Shackleford's however, since their food is so very good and I simply LOVE their crab cakes!Major bummer to learn why they were no longer participating with Restaurants.com . . . they were closed and out of business! They sti...Read More

I cannot believe how long I've been coming to Williamsburg, dating back to when my mom lived here in the late 1980's and since buying a timeshare there in 2001, and have never visited The Cheese Shop. When my mom lived here, she and my sister who also lived in Williamsburg used to enjoy lunches either as carry-out or dining outside on the patio. Since that time, they have expanded and moved to Merchant's Square. The four of us "girls" along with toddler Noah enjoyed a sunny Saturday afternoon of sandwiches and people watching on the front patio the faced DOG Street (Duke of Gloucester Street for those not from Williamsburg). As you enter the shop, you will first see a lot of sh...Read More

I thought I had eaten at just about every breakfast and pancake place in Williamsburg. How refreshing to come back and find TWO new dining venues. I seem to recall dining at The Gazebo many years ago when my mom was living here. Back then, however, I thought we had been there for supper so now I’m not sure because today they are only open for breakfast and lunch (open through 2:00p).With Cindy needing to get back to South Carolina, Pam and I decided to stop for breakfast before heading to the airport in Richmond. Admittedly, I am partial to a couple of places in Williamsburg but this was a pleasant dining experience.Arriving shortly after 10:00am on a Sunday could have been...Read More

The Perils of Summer Travel

We are coming up on the one year anniversary of the integration of NorthWest Airlines into Delta Airlines after their merger about two years ago. As much as people liked to fuss about "NorthWorst" little did they know it could get worse. I became a frequent flier, and a rather loyal one at that, with NorthWest, back in 1994. Since that time, I had far more good experiences than bad. For the most part, if they lost (aka "misrouted") my luggage, it was delivered to me within four hours. If they were oversold on a flight, they were generous with the "bump" money. All airlines have to deal with weather issues and mechanical problems so when those things happen, I’m more than happy that the...Read More
