When I visit our company’s office in Barcelona I usually stay at the Hesperia Sant Just which is not the most convenient place for going into the city but very handy for work. I’m not sure if it was full this week or if someone was ‘experimenting’ but I found myself over the road from the Hesperia at the Novotel Sant Joan Despi instead. One of my Belgian colleagues swears he likes the Novotel better but I can only assume he’s taking some kind of perverse pleasure from self-denial as it’s really not a patch on the usual place. It’s not a bad hotel at all, but it suffers by comparison.I arrived late in the evening with two colleagues and we came out from the Olympic Port by taxi. The taxi dr...Read More

Restaurant | "When Will We Ever Learn?"

La Taberna Gallega Photo, Barcelona, Spain
Quote:
It seems I never learn – or at least not the right thing at the right time. I learned to try to keep my mouth shut and go along with other people’s suggestions and then I regretted last night that I didn’t speak up and suggest a different dinner destination. I knew we’d get ripped off and sure enough that’s exactly what happened. Mind you if we hadn’t gone, my colleagues would never have realised what I might have saved them from so I guess a lesson was had all round. We arrived at Barcelona airport on the flight from Amsterdam. It was my first time in the new terminal and I was impressed. They weren’t so impressed that I had a bag in the hold and we had to wait. They suggested that we skip...Read More

Melia Barcelona

Best Of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Stylish but not so Central"

Quote:
I spent a week at the Melia in Barcelona when attending a training course at IESE about 7 years ago. It was a very pleasant and comfortable hotel and was located close to the Diagonal and about a half hour walk from the IESE college. Although we were catered for every night as part of the training course, there were plenty of restaurants and bars in the area. It’s not really ‘central’ Barcelona as it’s quite a walk to the downtown area, but there’s still lots to see and do in the district. The hotel was stylish and understated with an air of unflashy quality about it. The rooms were a good size and well-equipped and with pleasant inoffensive décor. To be honest, I don’t recall too much abou...Read More

HCC Montblanc Hotel

Hotel | "Bring your Ear Plugs"

Quote:
I stayed at the Montblanc in Barcelona about 6 years ago. At that time the company I worked for had an office nearby and this was the hotel where they had a preferential rate. This was regrettable becuase the Montblanc was without doubt one of the worst hotels I've ever had the misfortune to stay in, whether in Barcelona or anywhere else. The hotel is located on Via Laietana, just north of the point at which the road splits in two arms. On paper this is a great location in easy walking distance of most of the downtown sites such as Placa Catalunya, Bario Gotica and the Cathedral - off the paper and into the real world it's hell on earth for anyone who's less than profoundly deaf....Read More

Hotel Majestic

Hotel | "Not Quite As Majestic As It Must Have Once Been"

Quote:
I spent three nights at the Majestic about 5 years ago for an international conference. I was lucky that the hotel and conference were a package as I’m sure I’d never have been able to stay here if I’d needed to book it separately as no company I’ve worked for has ever been happy about booking you into five-star hotels. The best thing about the Majestic is the location. It has a prime position on the Passeig de Gracia, surely Barcelona’s most beautiful street, and is midway between Gaudi’s two most famous houses - Casa Mila (La Pedrera) and Casa Batllo. The building itself is grand and attractive but can’t really compete with those two masterpieces. It occupies a corner plot whic...Read More
