Back in the summer my husband and I took a week’s holiday from work and – unusually for us – we didn’t go away or at least I should say more accurately, we didn’t go abroad. Instead with our National Trust membership cards burning a hole in our pockets we decided to spend some time seeing what entertainment we could find in our home country. We spent a couple of days in Cheshire, a couple in York and then rounded off the week with a visit to the Cotswolds. I know the area pretty well after spending a lot of time in Chipping Campden for work so I went looking for a good deal on a hotel and got us a room for £59 for the two of us at the Noel Arms in Chipping Campden. The regular rate is £130 for a doubl...Read More

Update 2013 - Lake House has just been sold and is no longer in business. If your image of the British B&B is one of too much chintz, a smell of stale cabbage and a fussy nosey landlady then prepare to be surprised by this property. The Lake House B&B in Brixworth is the type of place that should come with a serious warning for potential guests. "Beware of property envy; if you stay here for a few days, it's very likely that your home will just feel strangely inadequate when you get back again". The Lake House is more like an exclusive country retreat than a typical B&B.Rosemary Tuckley and her husband David are quite simply the loveliest people to spend some time wi...Read More

De Vere University Arms

Hotel | "Not Quite as Good as it Thinks it Is"

Quote:
The University Arms in Cambridge promotes itself as one of the city's finest heritage hotels which is quite a claim in a city where heritage comes pretty much as standard. It does have one of the finest locations in the city however. It over-looks the large park that's known as Parker's Piece which is a beautiful plot of public space where you'll find lots of sports pitches and plenty of people walking their dogs or taking a stroll. The University Arms is right in the heart of the city, close to the shops, restaurants, pubs and colleges. You couldn't really find a better site. I was excited to stay there a few years ago when I had clients visiting from Bulgaria and the company I worked for...Read More

Hotel | "Best in the Area for Conferences"

Quote:
If you work in the East Midlands anywhere along the A14 corridor then there's a fair chance that sooner or later you'll end up at the Kettering Park for a conference or a meeting. When I worked in Peterborough and Northampton, this was often the venue of choice because of the excellence of their conference facilities and the convenience of their location just a minute or two from Junction 9 of the A14 which is the main East West artery road in the area.Despite its proximity to such a busy route, the hotel is remarkably quiet and I'm sure that's in part due to it being situated at a level that's lower than the road. Somehow this keeps the noise literally above your head. When you leave the ...Read More

Hotel | "The Jury's Out but my Bet's on Guilty!"

Quote:
I stayed at the Jury's Inn in central Birmingham about 3 years ago. The place was chosen by a supplier who'd invited me and a colleague to join her for a celebratory night out. I'd never stayed in a Jury's Inn before so I had little in the way of pre-conceptions.The hotel is on Broad Street, one of Birmingham's most lively streets. There's no official hotel car park but there is a public car park nearby which is quite expensive but there's absolutely no way I'd abandon my car on the street even if I could find somewhere to park.First impressions were that the lobby is exceptionally large and this is perhaps because the enormous restaurant area takes up a lot of the space. It's ...Read More
