Hotel | "Nice - but not for a Holiday"

Holiday Inn Ellesmere Port Photo, Ellesmere Port, England
Quote:
The Holiday Inn at Ellesmere Port is a lovely hotel in a (mostly) lousy location. The company I work for uses it as a back-up hotel when those nearer to the office are already full but increasingly people who’ve got any transport, prefer to go to the HI because it’s nicer than the local places. Most people who stay here will probably be visiting one of the industrial sites in the area such as the Stanlow oil refinery or the businesses on the Wirral. It’s not really a tourist destination although the hotel stands very close to the Ellesmere Port canal museum and a short distance from the Cheshire Oaks shopping centre. If you want a cheap alternative to staying in Chester, and have your own transport, t...Read More

Hotel | "An Airport Hotel That Doesn't Feel Like One"

Quote:
Airport hotels are generally rather miserable characterless places that you wouldn't choose to spend too much time in. Etrop Grange is different. It's the kind of place people do choose to have their wedding receptions and big business meetings in. You can almost pretend when you are there that there isn't really a massive airport right on your doorstep. It's surprisingly quiet and even more surprisingly charming. The hotel is close to the roundabout where you turn off for Terminal 2 and it's what I would call a 'proper' hotel. Instead of a typical airport hotel that looks like it's been built from an Ikea flat pack kit, Etrop Grange is a beautiful red brick Georgian mansion that dates back...Read More

Hotel | "Very Traditional and Next to the Station"

Quote:
These days I'm wary of hotels close to railway stations. Once upon a time the grandest of buildings were built beside the railways as temples to the worship of the iron road. Nowadays all too often the phrase 'near the railway station' appears on a hotel description and my mental association is 'run down, lots of prostitutes, tramps, drunks and drug dealers'. Perhaps that's just my over-active imagination, but it's good to know that near the station isn't always a bad thing. One such hotel that still tries to maintain the old air of grandeur is the Queens in Chester. It stands directly opposite the railway station and still has a liveried doorman standing outside to open the door and pass t...Read More

Village Hotel Warrington

Hotel | "Dependable but Dull"

Quote:
I used to work in Warrington and was working in the town back when the Village was being built in the 1990s. I stayed there several times when we had events in the town that made it difficult to get home again afterwards. My experience of it was therefore based on the time when everything was brand spanking new and shiny. I suspect that if it's anything like the other Village hotels that I've visited (Bromborough and one of the South Manchester ones) it's probably not looking quite so great these days. The location is an odd combination of central and isolated. It seems to be built in one of the bends of the river Mersey on a plot of land that's not really close to much at all (though I thi...Read More

Barcelo Shrigley Hall Hotel

Hotel | "Golf, Weddings and Conferences "

Quote:
Barcelo Shrigley Hall as it's now officially known is familiar to most locals by its old name of Pott Shrigley. It's a spectacular country hotel with enormous grounds including an 18 hole international standard golf course. Undoubtedly it's one of the best hotels in the area. If golf's not your thing, there's still plenty of space to explore in the grounds without interfering with the golfers.Shrigley Hall has a fantastic location near to the edge of the Peak District yet only about 15 miles from central Manchester (and even nearer to the airport). I spent a few days there for a work conference and despite it being many years ago, it was such a beautiful hotel that it remains in my memory....Read More
