I had won the 'participation' prize in a site-sponsored photo contest, and that prize consisted of airfare for two to London, plus 5 nights’ lodging at the Radisson Edwardian May Fair. Let me add that without this prize, the chances that we would ever stay at a 5-star hotel in central London would have been extremely slight—or ‘nil’ as our Brit friends might say.

The May Fair is located on Stratton Street, just a stone’s throw from Piccadilly. It is within easy walking distance of central’s London’s great central parks, shops in all price ranges, restaurants, pubs, museums, and even the theatre distant. For those who prefer not to walk, a bus and tube station is just down the street near Green Park—and of course taxis are generally available right outside the door. So in terms of accessing the best of London, The May Fair’s location is excellent.

As for the overall ambience, this 5-star hotel embraces rather than overpowers. Décor is minimalist in terms of glitz and clutter. Still, the generous use of marble and original artwork make the large open space of the lobby feel somewhat like a museum. On the whole, the style of the lobby and other public spaces is modern, elegant, and understated. For all that, there is nothing understated about the service.

Our overnight flight from the States meant that we arrived at The May Fair well ahead of the designated check-in time. Not only did the reception clerk move whatever mountain was necessary to get us a room immediately, she left the desk to take us up and settle us in. At each step along the way, she conducted a thoroughly professional and friendly seminar on the hotel’s amenities and services. Once in our room, she demonstrated how to operate everything from the phone system to the AC controls. From greeting us at reception until taking our leave once we were settled in our room, she made us her complete focus. All this was done in a positive and generous manner. I’m still not quite sure how or when our luggage arrived, but when she left, there it was. This reception process was completely welcoming, and it remains for me a unique and positive hotel experience. Our deluxe room was on a back corner of the top floor, and like the public areas, it was a study in understated elegance.

Furnishings and fabrics used in the room were expensive and richly textured—from the leather headboard, to the variety of fabrics used for the bedding, to the sculpted carpets, to the marble vanity in the en suite. The color scheme featured warm earth tones. The furnishings looked scant—in part because the room was sufficiently large to avoid feeling crowded and in part because of the unusually large en suite. The en suite was effectively a second room that was as deep as the bedroom and about a third its width. It contained not only the double vanity, toilet, bathtub (with its own TV, no less), and walk-in ‘power’ shower, but also shelves, closet space, dresser space, and an in-room safe. These inclusions meant that most items that tend to clutter a hotel room were removed from the guests’ primary living space.

The bedroom itself contained a king bed, a bedroom bench, a round glass table with two upholstered chairs (the table doubled as a desk and the phone was here), a lounger, and a modern multi-level side unit that served as a stand for the flat-screen television and as a mini bar with tea/coffee cart with appropriate supplies. The room was flooded with light, with windows running the length of the corner room’s two exterior walls. The windows offered little more to view than neighboring rooftops, but when the drapes were open, they admitted all the light you could wish for. All in all, the room and its en suite formed an extremely pleasant place to relax, sleep, and bathe. Housekeeping made sure that it was always immaculately clean.

Our lodging did not include board, but on our first morning we partook of one breakfast service in the hotel’s restaurant. Breakfast was offered at a single price of £25. It’s somewhat unfair to refer to it as a breakfast buffet, but Part One of the morning meal consisted of a wide variety of pastries, beverages, fruits, cereals, yogurts, and other assorted foods—these were the starters. Part Two consisted of a full breakfast ordered from the menu and served hot from the kitchen. The food was fresh, tasty, and abundant—no doubt too abundant. We did not repeat the experience, but we remember it fondly.

The only other hotel service that we used during our stay was the concierge desk. We asked for and obtained tickets to two shows in the London theatre district. In both cases, sad to say for us as guests, we made our request on short notice. And on both occasions, the concierge staff came through with flying colors. Not only did they obtain the tickets, they gave us clear and thorough instructions on how to make sure there was no confusion once we reached the theatre. All charges for the tickets were clearly detailed a written summary. So while the tickets were expensive, especially the second set to a very limited show, we knew at a glance where every pence had been spent. Service was professional, courteous, and timely.

In general, service at the May Fair was largely invisible—as with the porter who brought our luggage and did not wait for a tip. Housekeeping was thorough, yet we never saw a maid or a cleaning cart. The doormen, who needed to be visible, were courteous and helpful. Our hands never touched a door at the entrance of the May Fair, and guest requests for taxis were handled with efficiency. The hotel, its elevator, the corridors—everything we saw was squeaky clean and in good working order.

Checkout provided us with our first glitch in service at The May Fair—if one can call it such. An extra £50 charge had been added to our bill for a breakfast service we did not take. When I pointed out the error, the reception clerk reviewed the charges, confirmed that it there had indeed been an error, and apologized for the inconvenience.

All told, our stay at The May Fair was a true gift. It provided us with a calm, comfortable base for exploring London. We weren’t quite a princess and her prince, but for a few days we felt that we were. Thank you IgoUgo. The private notes of appreciation went out long ago, but the public version is long past due.

When my mother, sister, daughter, and I were planning our trip to England for March 2002, we included an overnight stay in London at the beginning of our holiday. This was my mother's one chance to visit England, so we wanted something near the city center that would be handy to transportation. Thanks to my husband's willingness to contribute his Marriott points to our cause, we wanted a Marriott hotel. More specifically, we wanted a room suitable for four adult travelers. The nearest match to our requirements and the availability of a room through the Marriott Rewards program was a room at the Marriott Regents Park.

In most respects, the Marriott Regents Park was a typical representative of its kind. With 303 rooms in a 7-story building, the hotel includes an onsite restaurant and cocktail lounge, small gift shop, concierge and laundry services, barber and hair stylist, secretarial services and internet connections--mostly for-fee services. In addition, it offers guests the usual free use of indoor pool, sauna, and health and exercise equipment.

For 30,000 points and a Category 6 redemption certificate, we expected a small suite or a large room. Instead, we were lodged in a "quality room" that contained two double beds. With its two beds, the room was small and grudgingly adequate--but it certainly wasn't a suite. My hunch is that it had originally been intended to hold two single beds. The room included all the usual accommodations for the business traveler: two phone lines, voice mail, desk, iron and hair dryer, television with cable access, daily newspapers, and complimentary coffee and tea station. Indeed, it would have been comfortable and even roomy for a single business traveler or suitable for a couple. But for four people (four women, no less), it was cramped--especially so after we opened our luggage.

Based on our conversations with Marriott during the reservation / redemption process, we thought the room we were assigned at that time normally run about £230 per night. When I discovered that the billing rate for our room during the season we traveled was actually only £79, I felt that my husband's highly valued Marriott points had not bought the promised level of comfort. For 30,000 Marriott points per night, we expected far more.

Irritants associated with claiming our room using Marriott points included what seemed an unnecessarily lengthy check-in process and an expensive confusion over whether breakfast was included under our Rewards redemption. (As it turns out, it was not included.) At check-in, I was kept busy confirming all the sundry details of our redemption while other guests came and went quickly. It was if the system required the desk staff to make it clear to as many others as possible that we were redemption guests and therefore held a lower status in the Marriott universe. This is not a problem I've encountered with other rewards programs. (I later learned that this awkward situation was not initiated by the hotel. As the same problem repeated itself with another Marriott redemption at another location, I could only conclude that it came from corporate.)

Irritants associated with the room itself, aside from its relatively small size, focused on the minibar. I have encountered honor bars in other hotels, and I understand that the convenience of such a bar carries a price. Still, I have never before encountered a bar quite like this one. It was a well-stocked mini-fridge that was equipped with sensors--as we were warned, highly sensitive sensors. This minibar operated on a touch-and-take basis. As explained to us during check-in, anything we touched, we bought--and we did so at an extraordinary price. As adults, we were easily able to resist the temptations of Coke, chocolate bars, and Pringles "crisps" located right in our room. The price attached ensured that. But if we had been traveling with children, the cost of that minibar equipped with its "highly sensitive" sensors could easily have been exorbitant. Moreover, the well-stocked minibar prohibited us from placing treats of our own in a fridge that otherwise seemed so handy.

On the brighter side, the room was clean and the staff at the Marriott Regents Park was delightful. Just like back home in the States, we sometimes had difficulty understanding the English-as-an-acquired-la nguage spoken by a high percentage of the staff. On the whole, however, our encounters with hotel personnel were always pleasant, and everyone worked to find a path of common understanding despite any attendant language differences.

The concierge staff helped us with directions to the nearest Underground station, held our luggage after check-out while we toured the city, arranged for our cab to Kings Cross Station, and sold us tickets to the Tower of London (thereby saving us a tedious wait in a very long queue). We were treated with dignity and courtesy. One member of the concierge staff even identified us for what we were: an elderly mother traveling with two daughters and a granddaughter. His concern for the needs of my mother and his apparent delight in our joint adventure were touching and reassuring. They helped to relax Mother after her long transatlantic journey, and they helped to dispel her misgivings over being so far from home.

Dining facilities were simply appointed but very pleasant. Prices were high, but it was London, after all. Quality was very good, and service was generally good. We took coffee in the lounge in the evening and breakfast the next morning. Lounge service was a bit slow, but the waitress was courteous. The coffee itself was strong and delicious. Breakfast in the dining room was also delicious, and breakfast service was prompt and friendly.

As for location, the main reason we had chosen the Marriott Regents Park, it served our needs well. The immediate neighborhood included Regents Park, the London Zoo, Kensington Park, and Kensington Palace. The nearest Underground station was about three blocks away, which easily connected us to any destination we might choose in central London. Cabs were plentiful, with a handful typically parked at the hotel entrance.

In the final analysis, I might choose the Marriott Regents Park again, but I would carry with me many lessons learned. Given reasonable alternatives, I would patronize the hotel only in the off season and I would not use Marriott Rewards points as payment for lodging. If I return, it will be because the staff was so courteous and helpful. Given those reasonable alternatives, however, I have always gone elsewhere during my subsequent stays in London--preferring small hotels that are not part of a global chain. Our stay at the Marriott Regents Park was not horrible, but especially in terms of the room itself, it did not live up to the expectations built by the Marriott Rewards program.

We would be there only two nights, and we wanted to stay close to the historic center of city. But we didn't want to stay in an expensive, luxurious hotel that would eat away at our travel funds. We wanted basic, reasonably comfortable accommodations that were close to some key sites and had easy access to public transportation.

As the principal travel consultant in the family, I finally settled on the Euro Hotel in the Bloomsbury district. I adored their Web site (which has been updated considerably, by the way), and at £80 (going price as of 2010 is £100) per night for an en suite double, it was a good value.

The hotel consists of three adjacent Georgian townhouses located on a quiet Victorian crescent. It is within walking distance of the British Museum, but at the same time, it is off the beaten path. The 'bed and breakfast' plan pleased us. We didn't want to have to forage for breakfast. The Web site promised hospitality and value, and that's what we expected.

Let me start with the good news. As promised on the Euro's Web site, I regard the Euro as essentially a good value in terms of cost. Prices were certainly competitive with other similar establishments in the Bloomsbury area. Moreover, I have no complaints about the one meal we were served, the size of our room and bath, or the general cleanliness of the facilities. Even the towels were soft and fluffy, as promised. The Euro also served as an excellent base for our London activities.

My dissatisfaction with the Euro focuses solely on the implicit promise of hospitality and good humor that figured so largely on its Web site. Although I can't say anyone was overtly rude to us, I also can't say anyone was particularly friendly. In fact, on one occasion my husband and I were kept waiting unnecessarily by the young woman attending the reception desk. She was not seeing to the needs of another guest, she was not attending to other business, and she was not on the phone. She had to know we were there, two middle-aged people standing a few feet away--yet for no apparent reason she kept us waiting several minutes before she acknowledged our presence.

Beyond allowing us to leave our luggage in the reception area until our room was ready, no member of the Euro staff ever volunteered a friendly gesture. We were never politely 'welcomed' to the hotel, offered information about the surrounding community, or extended a helping hand. When we directly asked a desk clerk to recommend a local pub that served good food, we were told in essence that pub food and good food are mutually exclusive. This observation was not delivered humorously, and no further assistance was offered. We were just told that there were plenty of pubs in the area--try one. When we left, no one thanked us for choosing the Euro. In essence we received no warm smiles (well, maybe a somewhat lukewarm and hassled smile from the server at breakfast), no offers of assistance, and no 'thank you for coming, please return.' The final straw, in my eyes, has been the owner/manager's failure to respond to my comments (essentially the same as those you see above) emailed to him about our treatment shortly after our return to the States.

During our 18 days in the UK for this particular trip, the attention we received from the Euro staff was hand's down the poorest of any place we stayed. I can sum up our Euro experience by saying that we felt we were being 'processed' to make way for the next guests. This is also the only place we stayed that didn't offer some accommodation for an early travel schedule. Our hosts at every other place we stayed either got up early and made our breakfast, offered to leave out a serve-yourself continental-style breakfast, or provided a discount for those who did not take breakfast. The Euro did none of these things.

Ten years later, I'm retreating a bit from my oath never to return to the Euro. I've gone back to look at their Web site as it now exists, and I have to say that almost everything that originally drew us to Euro still stands--value, location, the promise of a clean and comfortable place to stay. The current Web site has lost the sense of humor and personal touches that so appealed to me back then. Now it is much more professional in its presentation. For the most part, its promises are realistic and straightforward, though those promises still include 'special attention'.

Still, the failure to deliver on the promise of genuine hospitality was and is, in my eyes, a fatal flaw. Now that I'm past my long pique, I might give them a ring next time I plan a trip. If so, I'll contact the manager, describe my past experience, and see how it goes from there. We shall see if the Euro is ready for redemption--if so . . . well, who knows? I'll let you know what happens.

In April 2008, Himself and Yours Truly took our eldest grandchild on his first trip abroad. The destination he selected, perhaps with a bit of coaxing from Grandma and Grandpa, was the UK. In planning our 2-week trip, we set aside 4 days for London. Once that was decided, I went off in search of a base of operations for those 4 important days. Acting as the family trip planner, I selected the New Linden, a small hotel straddling Bayswater and Notting Hill, not far north of Kensington Gardens. The location was handy for buses and the tube, easily facilitating our forays around and about London.

In the end, that choice came down to space and price. I wanted a space that would provide both our grandson and us with an opportunity for privacy, and I wanted to do so without paying the usual London prices for a ‘suite’. Our room at the New Linden was billed as a quadruple, though effectively it was a suite. It consisted of two bedrooms, one with two twins and one with a double, a small sitting area, and a generous bath. The double bedroom was several steps down (just short of a full flight), connected by an attractive staircase complete with columns, built-in shelves, and a small landing about midway down. There was no door between the two sleeping areas, so the layout provided access as well as privacy--both of which were needed by an 11-year-old so far away from Mom and Dad. For a London hotel, this was an incredibly delightful space. Our grandson loved it, and so did we.

The lower-level bedroom with the double bed was cheerful and fully adequate in terms of floor space and amenities. It had a small flat-screen television on the wall opposite the bed, with a long narrow desk/bureau space along the wall beneath. The shelves near the upper end of the stairs to the main level were perfect for collecting cameras, shopping bags, guidebooks, and the miscellany that goes with sightseeing. They did a good deal to keep down the clutter of travel.

The upper level of our quad was long and narrow. The two twin beds were placed width-wise at one end, access to the stairs down and sitting room were in the middle space, and the separate bathroom was at the opposite end--next to the door to the hallway. The bedroom area included a fairly large flat-screen TV facing the beds and a desk area with Internet access. If there is a criticism to offer for our lodging, the bedroom end of this upper level felt a tad crowded in terms of space available near the foot of the twin beds. That space was perfectly adequate for young children but a bit tight for adults. Any closeness in floor space around the beds was at least partially compensated by a 15-foot Victorian metal ceiling, freshly coated with white paint.

The sitting area proved a godsend, just large enough to provide a space where we could all sit comfortably around a small lounge table. It was a good place for planning a day’s outing or reflecting on the day’s adventuress—not to mention writing postcards home. Desk space was available in each bedroom area, but the sitting room proved more inviting for most of our in-room activities.

Our quad had recently been refurbished, and it was clean and neat as a pin. The bathroom tiles sparkled, the paint was fresh, the linens might well have been new, and the carpets and furnishings were clean. There were no chips, scratches, or scuff marks visible anywhere. Maid service was careful, yet unintrusive. Towels and trash bins were kept fresh, but things were left where we put them. I liked that.

Breakfast was a generous continental buffet with a selection of cold cuts and cheeses, boiled eggs, soft yoghurt, fresh fruit (bananas and apples at a minimum), prepared fruit, sweet rolls, a choice of breads, cereals, and a range of beverages. We were always fully satisfied, and the quality of the offerings easily passed our personal sniff tests. The staff ensured freshness by putting out moderate quantities of food, then replenishing as needed, which I much prefer to putting everything out to sit for the entire breakfast period.

The hotel is set among a block of Victorian townhouses, and the neighborhood still retains its residential charm. The small lobby’s décor is quietly East Asian, and the staff is polite and attentive. As might be expected for a townhouse conversion, hotel facilities were limited. We dropped our baggage off early in the day after our overnight transatlantic flight, and though there was no official baggage hold, the desk clerk volunteered to stow our belongings away under watchful eyes while we went off in search of a late breakfast. The elevator was small and located along a narrow hallway. Our party of three travelers with suitcases and carry-ons filled it completely. All public areas were clean and inviting, though perhaps not quite to the level of our quad.

The New Linden is listed on various hotel sites at 2, 3, or 4 stars. Take your pick. I venture to approximate 3 stars based on its lack of urban hotel facilities. In the final analysis, however, it’s the experience that counts. Based on our experience, we would happily return to this charming hotel. It combines convenience with value for money, and we left with happy memories. Who could ask for more?

We’d spent 9 of our 10 days in Scottish and English countryside, and such a price seemed exorbitant by comparison.

On arrival, our pre-booking from Bakewell was in hand and our room was ready. The Shalimar is a small hotel located in Hounslow and has a vaguely Indian subcontinent sort of atmosphere. There were a limited number of free parking spots in front (we grabbed one), as well as a Tube station a few blocks away. We had one afternoon/evening (starting around 4 PM) to 'do' London, so these aspects of the Shalimar served us well.

The room itself was a disappointment. It was very small and without character, with the double bed taking up the available space almost entirely. The en suite consisted of two very small adjacent cabinets along one wall—one for the shower and the other for the toilet. I have never seen such an arrangement before or since, and I hope never to encounter one again! The cabinets were cramped and could only be escaped by way of the almost equally cramped room.

The tea/coffee station was placed on a tiny shelf affixed to the wall at the foot of the bed. I don’t think we used it—there was simply too little room to risk it. Our problem with space was exacerbated by the fact that this was our last night, and we needed to rearrange our luggage for the flight home. Between our suitcases and, yes, Himself’s golf bag (not a small travel version, of course, but the grand ‘dressy’ bag he’d brought to honor his trip to St. Andrews), we were bit players in the classic comedy of Americans traveling abroad.

On the other hand, the room was relatively clean. I have no memory of encountering suspicious or disquieting substances in awkward corners. Then again, there was hardly enough space to look!

Our rate included breakfast, but our flight out was very early, so I have no information to offer as to its quality and variety. I will note that the reception clerk, who was advised of our early departure, made no offer to accommodate us with a few pastries that might be added to the tea station in our room. We probably would have declined with thanks, but the willingness (or lack of same) to offer some concession to an early department is always noticed.

The Web site for the Shalimar shows much more accommodating rooms than the one we encountered, so perhaps there have been renovations that make better use of available space. Our room, for example, could have been converted to a perfectly adequate single. If I were to consider this hotel again, I would need answers to very specific questions about the size of the room and the nature of the en suite. The Shalimar’s rates are still very reasonable by London standards—but the devil is always in the details.

In the final analysis, we did find an accommodation within easy driving distance of Heathrow and it was cheap. Would we return? Probably not—and certainly not without asking questions about the nature of the room.
