Quote: Port Douglas, when I first knew it, was a sleepy fishing village. Now it is on the world scene as an up-market tourist hideaway, visited by celebrities, presidents and others. Fortunately, with a bit of planning, it can still be enjoyed by ‘ordinary’ folk, as I recently discovered.

Story/Tip

Quote:
Sugar is the most important agricultural activity in this area of North Queensland and you see kilometres upon kilometres of cane in the fields. During the latter half of the year, you will be aware of the harvesting that is occurring and in Mossman, to the north, you can visit the sugar mill. For the rest of the year the Ballyhooly cane train, which now transports tourists, is a reminder of the importance of this industry.Mossman Mill is the most northern sugar mill in Australia and the first in tropical Australia to crush over 100,000 tonnes of sugar cane in a season. Mossman is located approximately 75 kilometres north of Cairns and about 20 kilometres from Port Douglas. Mossman towns...Read More

Mossman Gorge, Daintree National Park is a very accessible and scenic section of the World Heritage-listed Daintree National Park just north of Port Douglas. Strangler figs and epiphytic plants flourish and the crystal-clear Mossman River cascades over granite boulders. The area is also home to colourful Boyd's forest dragons. The Gorge provides a nice, easy and accessible introduction to tropical rainforest. Ideally, it is best experienced first thing in the morning, while the birds are calling, and before too many people arrive. Tour groups begin to arrive as early as 8.30am. Avoid hot summer afternoons, especially on weekends. Right at the entrance of the park is the Mossman Gorge Abor...Read More

Port Douglas has a large choice of restaurants but most of them are not cheap. If you are looking for an evening meal under A$80 for two, the choice is extremely limited. We had a visiting teenager with us so we walked the entire main street before deciding to go here and I must say that our expectations of the food were not particularly high. We decided on steak and fish dishes and must say that we were not disappointed. The steak was cooked exactly as we had ordered and the size was more than adequate. The barramundi was excellent and while the chips were overabundant, they were tasty and not particularly fatty. At A$15 each they were good value meals. For that price you...Read More

The Sea Temple Resort & Spa, is located on the beachfront at the southern end of Four Mile Beach and just a short drive to cosmopolitan Macrossan Street with its trendy restaurants, shops and galleries. Sea Temple offers a range of luxury self contained hotel and apartment accommodation, some with a private roof top spa, and golf retreat apartments with a private plunge pool. I was particularly interested in going here because I had heard that this was the newest luxury accommodation in the Port Douglas area and it was setting the benchmark for accommodation. I don’t entirely agree.Sea Temple Port Douglas offers what it calls luxury studio, 1, 2 & 3 bedroom holiday apartments and v...Read More

This is one of only a very few international standard resorts in North Queensland that are right on the beach. It occupies 130 hectares of tropical landscaped gardens and also boasts a championship 18-hole golf course and 2 hectares of magnificent swimmable saltwater lagoons. It provides great resort living at every turn. When it first opened more than twenty years ago it was a sensation and it turned Port Douglas from a sleepy fishing village into a major tourist destination.I attended the official opening and was very impressed at the time so I wanted to see what I thought of it now. I was not disappointed. Yes, some parts are showing their age a little but the basic concept of luxury an...Read More
