Vila Nova de Gaia is the south bank of Porto in northern Portugal. The quickest route from Foz do Douro across the river to the long, low, tiled-roof warehouses in the town of Vila Nova de Gaia is the Arrabida Bridge (built in the mid 20th century) at the point where the river begins to widen. The historic centre of Gaia is still the true centre of port production and great changes are taking place in this area.Port producers struggle with cramped conditions in their lojas (Portuguese for ‘warehouses’ or ‘shops’ – hence ‘lodges.’ Lorries squeeze down narrow, winding streets where visitors also wander. Here and there lines of washing dangle from crumbling balconies, and old men wearing jump...Read More

The Festival of Saint John is celebrated throughout Portugal in the last week of June. Every town, city and village will celebrate this feast day but Porto is the city that really knows how to put on a show. Porto explodes into a riot of drunken revelry which is sometimes anarchic and a mixture of religious and pagan rituals which are often very entertaining, amusing and lots of fun. Remember, it is the summer solstice, also. The streets of Porto on this day and night are very decorative with grandiose altars, colourful stalls and stages for live entertainment. The party actually begins on the day of the 23rd, St John's Eve, with a model making competition between the districts of Porto. Th...Read More

Attraction | "Beautiful Bookshop on Rua das Carmelitas"

Quote:
Just up from the oval church and huge tower of the Clerigos church in Vitorio (Porto Centro), you will stumble across one of the most beautiful bookshops I have encountered. I have never seen so many books under one glorious roof. I say glorious because it isn't just the books that I love this shop for. The building and interior decor is outstanding. The building was erected in 1906 and built in a neo-Gothic style. The stained glass ceiling will give you neck ache as you arch your back to look at the intricate designs and colours. Wood carvings and fine stucco is interesting to look at as you wander around the shelves holding 60 thousand books or more. Some are new, others second hand and yes, there a...Read More

Attraction | "Porto's Ancient Riverside Area"

Ribeira (The Riverside) Photo, Porto, Portugal

The Portuguese word Ribeira means riverside area and is a very popular district of Porto in northern Portugal. If you go north of the river and just west of the bridge you will find this hive of activity. Tourists and locals love to flock here but I have to say that I have never seen this main promenade which runs at the side of the river ever crowded. Probably because the Cais (Quay) da Ribeira is one of the widest quays I have walked on.At all times during the day this lively area is full of people. Many old people live here in the pretty, colourful apartments and houses that tumble down the hillside into the Cais. Musicians play and hold out their trilby hats hoping for the odd coin to ...Read More

Attraction | "There's a Lot More to the Man Under the Hat"

Sandeman Porto Wine Lodge Photo, Porto, Portugal
Quote:
A visit to Porto and the Douro region of northern Portugal has to involve a visit to one of the many lodges on offer in the area of Vila Nova de Gaia. There are many famous lodges to choose from and Sandeman's is one of the most colourful and informative tours to go on. A visit to this lodge will introduce you to an excellent display explaining how port is made, then a film of the Douro Valley and the port wine process. The basic tour costs 4 euros and this is refunded if you buy any bottles which are on sale in the shop, and takes you through the ageing cellars and the Port Museum, with a tasting of red and white port. The Museum has a wonderful collection of ancient wine bottles. If you feel incli...Read More
