Hostal Villanueva is right on the edge of Tarifa’s old town and is a clean and fresh alternative to the ‘hostals’ inside the old town itself which are tremendously popular and often full in high season. We had hoped to find somewhere in the old town proper but everywhere was full; however, Hostal Villaneuva half fits the bill because it is built into the north wall of the old town. One of the benefits of it not being a property that’s entirely in the old town is that the rooms are slightly bigger than they would be in an older building.

We walked in off the street and booked a room without a problem and at a fairly busy time. I’d say this was more to do with the location and being prepared to compromise than any reflection on the quality of the place. Basically, the rooms in the old town go first. The man who dealt with our enquiry was friendly enough and spoke a little English. There was a brief form to fill in and we were shown to our room on the first floor.

Our room was exactly as it should be - clean, comfortable, working air conditioning and a useful blind that blocked the sun but kept the room cool. The interior was typically Spanish with tiled floors and white walls. The tiled floors helped a little in keeping the place cool but the air conditioning worked a treat and didn’t take long to really chill the room down. There was no extra cost for use of the air-conditioning as there had been a week earlier in a place we stayed in Seville.

The lovely pristine en suite bathroom was perfect after a day getting blown to bits by the harsh winds Tarifa is famous for. The shower was excellent and if I’m honest I could have stayed in there all night. The towels were soft and fluffy and there were plenty of them.
There was no fridge in the room which was a little disappointing given how hot it was at the time. There was a television with mainly Spanish channels and a couple of international news channels.

Hostal Villanueva is described as a ‘hostal restaurant’ and the ground floor is a restaurant which is open to non residents. However, in the mornings, it’s where hotel guests are served breakfast. We had breakfast included in the price of our room. It was very basic but acceptable; there was coffee, juice and ‘pan tostada’, that’s toast. We didn’t eat in the restaurant at any other time.

Checking out was very easy; all we had to do was hand back the room key. On this subject, there was one thing that did concern me and that was that anyone could have walked into the reception area and taken the room keys at the times that it was unstaffed. This area was just inside the front door which was open during the day and into the evening.

Hostal Villanueva has a good location just five minutes walk from the beach and moments from the shops and the old town. There were shops, bars and restaurants close by but that’s not to say it was a noisy area. We slept well and there was no noise from inside or outside the hotel.

If this sounds appealing I’d advise you to book in advance in high season to be sure of getting a room. However, if you are in Tarifa and can’t get into the old town, this is a great choice, especially if you are driving as you can park more easily here than in the pedestrianised old town.
