My husband and I traveled to the Bahamas from June 4 through June 12 (2006) for our Honeymoon. We stayed in Paradise Island at Harborside from June 4-6, island hopped to Coral Sands on Harbour Island from June 7-11, and then spent the night in Nassau at Orange Hill Inn on June 11 before heading home. We came in expecting a fun vacation with lots of activities, ‘Disney-style’ food at a high price, and crowds. Hotel RoomWe had the Deluxe 1 Bedroom Villa in building 7 (#3714) at Harborside. This was one of the older buildings but we found the room to be clean, well kept, and spacious. Check out the posted pictures to see our view. We had a great view of the harbor, yachts, and At...Read More

Husband and I visited Atlantis in June 06 on our honeymoon. One night, we took the Atlantis shuttle bus out to the One and Only to dine at the restaurant Dune. We arrived early and took in the lovely gardens and grounds (which adds to the experience) prior to checking in for our dinner reservation. The decor at Dune is fresh and clean with a slight modern edge. Everything feels very open and the restaurant was crowded the night we visited. Upon a recommendation, I tried the orange mojito which was as good as I expected - slightly sweeter than the regular mojito but a refreshing and light drink to go with the meal. It's been a while since I visited, so I can't tell you exactly what we ate, but I rememb...Read More

Bahamas Ferries

Attraction | "A Two Hour Tour"

Bahamas Ferries Photo, Nassau, Bahamas

There are two primary options of travel between islands in the Bahamas - by boat or by air. We had initially booked an inter-island flight from Nassau to Harbour Island using Bahamas Air, but after difficult customer service with confirming my reservation and bad feedback from Bahamas Air travelers regarding lost luggage and flight delays, we canceled the reservation and booked a ferry ride using Bahamas Ferries. This two hour ferry ride was an easy trip from island to island. Leaving at 8am and arriving at 10am, we traveled on the "Bo Hengy", which was fast and on schedule. There was plenty of open air and enclosed seating. My husband is prone to motion sickness so we sat in the open air. Land ...Read More

Harbour Island - Pink Sand Serenity

Dunmore Town from Bo Hengy Ferry Photo, Bahamas, Caribbean
Quote:
Harbour Island is a stretch of land merely 3 miles long and 1 mile wide. Why visit? Well, the beach of course. But what about the town, you ask? Well, Dunmore Town is the only town on the island. Filled with quaint little houses that primarily line one or two streets, they are brightly colored aqua, pink, and yellow. White picket fences are covered by lovely green foliage with bright coral flowers. Is there anything to do in town? Well, not really. Why? Well, the beach, of course. Why travel two hours by ferry to not spend every moment you can on the most beautiful stretch of perfect coral sand (more on that in the next post)? We did explore the island and here is what we found:...Read More

... but I will try. After researching options for our honeymoon, I stumbled upon a website that listed 'top beaches of the world' and found Pink Sands Beach listed as one of the best. After seeing a glimpse of the beach in a photo and reading about its perfection, I decided to plan our entire honeymoon around this beach. It is not the easiest place to get to, which is why we combined the trip with a visit to Atlantis, Paradise Island. But it lived up to my expectations and then some. It is sheer perfection and worth the effort it takes to get there. The beach stretches the entire three mile length of Harbour Island and is 50-100 feet wide. If you look hard, you can spot the small li...Read More

My husband and I traveled to the Bahamas from June 4 through June 12, 2006 for our Honeymoon. We stayed in Paradise Island at Harborside from June 4-6, island hopped to Coral Sands on Harbour Island from June 7-11, and then spent the night in Nassau at Orange Hill Inn on June 11 before heading home. After seeing the different islands, my husband and I feel like we got to experience many different sides of the Bahamas – all unique and wonderful in their own way. I highly recommend to anyone visiting to venture beyond one island (and out of Nassau), because they each have their own personality. On to Harbour Island … We stayed at Coral Sands for 4 nights in June. We weren’t expec...Read More

Opened in 2003, Sip Sip – local slang for "gossip" -- is a kitschy, lime-green painted cottage overlooking Pink Sands Beach and is Harbour Island’s most popular lunch spot. Sip Sip is located within walking distance via the beach from most, if not all, ocean front hotels on the island (including our hotel – Coral Sands). The menu is written daily on a chalk board in the dining area and offers an ever changing option of dishes including the catch of the day and an eclectic mix of Mediterranean to Asian inspired items. Some of the regular items on the menu consist of the spicy conch chili, lobster quesadillas, curried chicken salad, hummus, and carrot cake with ginger-caramel frosting. The restauran...Read More

During our stay in Harbour Island, we slipped away from the beach around lunch time, hopped into our golf cart, and traveled into Dunmore Town to try the famous island cheeseburger made by Ma Ruby. The 'restaurant' is merely a small open room on the back of the Tingum Village hotel. Whether it is true or not, Ma Ruby has been listed as one of the ultimate "Cheeseburgers in Paradise" locations that Jimmy Buffett has actually dined at. My husband and I ordered one cheeseburger and one conch burger (which was also recommended). I am not a fan of conch, so it is difficult to rate the quality of this burger; however, it was my favorite preparation of conch I had during our trip. The conch ...Read More

On Harbour Island, we enjoyed dining at many of the lovely restaurants in town and honestly, did not have a meal we did not enjoy. However, our meal at the Landing was superb. I had the Rock Lobster and my husband had the Filet. Both meals were cooked to perfection. I, personally, was surprised at how delicious the steak was considering we were on such an isolated island. The service was appropriately paced (slow enough to enjoy your meal, but not so slow that you are impatient between courses). The atmosphere was very romantic and perfect for a special occasion. We truly enjoyed this dining experience, and would eat here again if we are so blessed with a second trip to the island. See pictures of f...Read More

From my research, I did not expect ‘upscale’ accommodations or dining on Harbour Island. However, this was not the case when we arrived. Harbour Island is an island that has recently caught the attention of multiple ‘power players’ and celebrities who were also charmed by the colonial architecture, quietly friendly atmosphere of the town, and coral colored beach. And this attention is evident in the quality of boutique accommodations and fine dining. Elle Macpherson, the Miller sisters (daughters of billionaire duty free magnate Robert Miller), Diane von Furstenberg, and India Hicks (Ralph Lauren model) have all owned property on the island. Hicks purchased and refurbished the Landing Hotel and ...Read More

Nassau - Live on the Edge

We cannot recommend this place for any type of traveler, whether they are passing through Nassau or looking for an extended stay. My husband's comment "I'd rather sleep in a tent on the beach than stay there" rings true.My husband and I stayed at Orange Hill Beach Inn on our last night in Nassau. We were sorely and very very very dissappointed. Our biggest regret was when the owner showed us the room, not walking right back out and staying somewhere else. Anywhere ... please ....We had a room that faced the pool. The sink in the bathroom was leaking and the bed had a dip in the middle that forced both of us to teter on the edge of the bed to keep from falling into the abyss. No...Read More

After our blissful stay in Harbour Island, we returned to Nassau the night prior to our flight back home. We stayed on the outskirts of town and had the interesting experience of riding "the Jitney," or local bus from our motel into the main part of town to dine at the area known as the Fish Fry. The Jitney is like no other public bus I have ridden on. It was not air conditioned and filled with the friendly local bahamians. Never did we feel unsafe on the jitney, but it was definitely not an organized method of transportation. There are no stops. Basically, along the way, our busdriver would scout out people standing on the side of the road and shout at them as he whizzed b...Read More
