If you ever get the hankering for a snack while you're in Naples (although more than likely you'll stay full from all the treats you can't pass up), there is a great tradition that we noticed the locals doing...grabbing a few bites to-go from a "Friggitoria". These are fish-n-chip type places with a lot of fried, handy dishes.During the time walking around the streets we found a lot of these as storefronts (some attached to a pizzeria in the back) which were open to the road where people would line up at the case to order small bites. We decided to try a couple things so we stood in "line" and ordered a couple fried melanzane (eggplant) pieces, as well as panzarotti (deep fried mashed pota...Read More

You can't mention Naples without talking about one of their most famous staples: Pastries. "Sfogliatelle" to be exact. It's hard to walk one block in the city without seeing some sort of sign for the famous flaky pastry. Sfogliatelle are these cone-shaped pastries made with layers and layers of the thinest dough ever and filled with (usually) a mixture of not-too-sweet ricotta and candied orange rind. I love my Italian pastries, and have my favorites, so I couldn't wait to try a sfogliatella. As we wandered off the main road to cut through some smaller back streets, in the middle of a bit of residential and quiet areas we happened upon a lovely pasticceria called Angelo Carbone...Read More

Who could go to Naples without trying their most famous dish... PIZZA!?Off of one of the main thoroughfares in the historic district known as "Spaccanapoli", on Via dei Tribunali we found a handful of pizzerias that by dinnertime were overflowing with lines of locals and visitors...all mostly Italian. And all waiting for a seat in the small dining area to enjoy the obviously amazing pizzas. We were given a recommendation for Pizzeria I. Decumani ahead of time, and luckily got there as the last 2 tables were being filled and just before the line started filling the street. It was quite simple inside and we were pretty much the only foreigners that I saw. The people were friendly...Read More

When we arrived in Naples, one of our first stops was to a bar to see if the rumors that Naples has some of Italy's best coffee were true...and I can say emphatically, that YES. they. do. It was immediately apparent. It's all just a little more of everything. A little more rich, a little more thick, a little more dark. ...and a little more 'little'. Seriously an espresso was only about 1.5 tablespoons worth.I ordered a marocchino (sometimes known as a mocacchino, espressino, or an americanino as we heard for the first time in Ischia) - which is my preferred Italian coffee drink. Basically it comes a small glass version of the espresso cup layered as such: sprinkle of cocoa, esp...Read More

On our last trip to Italy, we spent the first day with friends in Umbria, and stopped in through Naples for a quick trip on to our main destination of Ischia (island in Bay of Naples). It took about 4 hours to arrive to Napoli by train from our quick time in central Italy, and by the time we got there it was well into the afternoon. Our only prior visit through the city was just to continue on to the Amalfi coast, but even finding our way around Stazione Napoli Centrale was bad enough. Although I'm quick to say that you can't judge a city by the train station, as most cities' worst parts happen to be around that area. I was a bit hesitant to check out this city without much pla...Read More
