Da Vinci - the Last Supper

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction | "A Classic Even Before the Da Vinci Code"

Quote:
Dan Brown - the author of the blockbuster novel "The Da Vinci Code" must have done more for the number of visitors to this attraction than any event in the past 10 years. That said this is an absolute classic painting which is stunningly beautiful and rare in that it is displayed where it was originially painted and hung by the great artist himself. The painting portrays the Last Supper with Jesus and the 12 disciples, it is rumoured that some of the characters are based on Da Vinci, and of course (a la Da Vinci code) that Mary Magdalene is also there disguised as a disciple! The painting is located in the beautiful Santa Maria del Grazie Abbey and the absolute top tip that I ca...Read More

Chocolat Milano

Restaurant | "One for the Sweet Toothed"

Now anyone visiting Italy knows that along with Pizza, pasta and red wine you must have an ice cream (or 6) as the Italian gelato is fantastic. Now, I visited in November so you might think, possibly not the best time of year to be eating ice cream. Well you would be wrong any time of year is great for ice cream but November is brilliant as you can have a hot chocolate to warm you up and an ice cream to cool you down all at once!So anyway after a hard days walking around the shops and sites of Milan I decided that I needed sugar so having asked for recommendations at our hotel and from previous visitors to Milan we ventured to Chocolat Milano. You will immediately no...Read More

Lamborghini Museum

Attraction | "See Some Fast Cars!"

Quote:
The Lamborghini museum and factory are located , well not quite within Milan itself but about 60 minutes away by train near the town of Modena, but it is definitly something that you can visit from Milan so I am including it in this journal!Take the train from Milan central station - the fare is around €60 return and unfortunately to make a day of it you will need to catch an early train as they are not all that regular. Get off at Modena and then a taxi or bus will take you to the factory. Or you could hire a car from Milan and drive yourself but we were scared of all the Italian drivers (sorry)! The factory and museum are located at the same space and you can book a tour of th...Read More

Le Meridien Excelsior Gallia

Hotel | "Great Place to Stay"

Quote:
When visiting Milan my husband and I tagged along with an organised tour visiting from New Zealand as my sister in law and her husband were on it. This meant staying at the Meridien Excelsior Gallia hotel where the group were staying. This hotel is located just across the road from the central station - it probably takes you 2 minutes to get to there. Luckily all the windows of the hotel are double glazed so you don't get too much train noise! The location is ideal for visiting Milan as you can get onto 3 different metro lines at the central station, and two more within 5 minutes walk. Busses and trams also go from outside this hotel. PLUS you can walk to the Duomo within 30 minutes so re...Read More

Attraction | "Fashion - Yes Please"

When visiting Milan in November I was (unfortunately from one point of view) seven months pregnant. This meant that I could not fit into any of my normal clothes and even my feet had swelled up so I was living in Ugg boots. Anyway feeling horribly unglamourous and very fat I visited the factory outlet with my sister in law, husband and brother,. THis is one of the few large factory outlet stores based in the city centre and is easily reached by metro or bus. It is fairly hard to find - we walked up and down the street before spotting a steady stream of VERY glamourous Italian women going into a building which looked like an office block. So, we decided to follow the...Read More

Sightseeing Tour Buses

Attraction | "Avoid - Expensive and Slow!"

Quote:
I am basing this on my experience of this company in Milan, Italy - but they are a company which runs bus tours in the majority of major cities around the world. What are they? A company which specialises in "hop on, hop off" bus tours in the major cities of the world. In Milan they ran two routes around the city with various points where you can jump on or off as you please at the attractions / historical sites / shopping districts. They also run tours to specific attractions around the city - for example in Milan a "Last Supper" tour which takes in a dinner, a talk on the famous piece of art and a guaranteed spot to see the famour painting. The other tours r...Read More
