No visit to Barcelona is complete without a visit to the fabulous spectacle which is the Magic Fountain.I had first seen the Magic Fountain on TV back in 1992 when Barcelona hosted the Olympics. It is situated not far from the outdoor Olympic Pool and stadium. I can remember being quite impressed by the fountain and thinking it would be nice to actually visit and watch the show.Sixteen years on my wish came true, as myself and my partner were on holiday in Spain and having longed to visit Barcelona, we booked a day trip to the city. We liked it so much we returned again this year. The fountain stands at the foot of the steps leading up to the impressive National Palace, situated...Read More

The Sacred Heart Church, Tibidabo

Attraction | "The Church on the Mountain"

Quote:
Anyone who visits Barcelona will not fail to notice Tibidabo, and this is due to the imposing church of Sagrat Cor (Sacred Heart) which stands at the top of the mountain, and the impressive statue of Jesus Christ on the highest spire of the church. On travelling in and out of Barcelona, seeing this church and statue on top of the mountain is a fantastic sight. The church is the work of architect Enrique Sagnier, and building commenced in 1902 and took 60 years to build, so it is actually not that old!The church is unusual in that it is built as a church on top of a church. The first tier is brown stone and the top tier is white stone.Steps lead up to the entrance of the chu...Read More

Port Vell

Attraction | "A Busy but Scenic Port"

Port Vell Photo, Barcelona, Spain

The Port Vell area of Barcelona is one that has benefitted greatly from its major upgrade for the 1992 Olympics. Before the Olympics it was a run down harbour with old warehouses and industrial buildings, but was then transformed into an attractive bustling port and entertainment centre which housed the 1992 Olympic Village and also opens the city up to the sea.I have visited Barcelona a few times and it is a city I love. It is hard to imagine Port Vell looking so different to how it looks today. It is an ideal place to begin or end a day trip to the city as it is situated at the bottom of La Rambla.~~Rambla de Mar~~Crossing a wooden pedestrian bridge (t...Read More

Restaurant | "A Great 'Experience'!"

Hard Rock cafe Photo, Barcelona, Spain

On my recent trip to Barcelona I re-visited the Hard Rock Cafe which is situated at the top of Las Ramblas on the plaza, Placa de Catalunya.I am quite a fan of this chain of bar/restaurants with their friendly 'Love All, Serve All' motto. The atmosphere, tasty food and good music as well as live performances and of course not forgetting the thing they are most famous for : the collections of rock memorabilia, make it a great place to visit. It is much more than just another bar/restaurant.~~How It All Began~~Back in the 70's, two music-loving Americans founded an American Diner-style bar in London called the Hard Rock Cafe, which proved to be a very popular pl...Read More

Attraction | "Montserrat - 'Sawn by Angels'"

Montserrat Photo, Barcelona, Spain
Quote:
Located in the centre of Catalonia, around 30km northwest of Barcelona, the mountain of Montserrat is an impressive site with its unusual rock formation ensuring it stands out from miles around. It is approx 10km long and 5km wide, with its highest point reaching 1232 metres. The strange configuration of the rocks led to it being known as the 'sawn mountain' with a famous poet once declaring it to be 'sawn by angels'. Indeed everyone of the 51 peaks has its own name and many of the crags are said to resemble faces and animals. Montserrat is also the site of a Benedictine Abbey where 100 monks reside and is home to the famous Escolania (Children's Choir). The impressive Basilica ...Read More
