On our last night we decided to have a girlfriend’s dinner out. I had spent most of my vacation doing what I always do, which is cram as much site seeing as possible. This also meant I hadn’t gotten a chance to hang out with Beth, who had so graciously let us stay at her beautiful home. She suggested Mi Pueblo since she is a regular. We arrive at the strip mall and go into the restaurant located at the end. It is around 5:30 so the crowds haven’t begun yet. We are seated in a booth and our waiter comes over to take our drink orders. We start with a round of margaritas and salsa and chips. Since I am designated driver and do not drink anyway, I just get a virgin strawberry margarita and tea...Read More

When Aunt Ellen and I were driving from Memphis to her friend Beth’s house, she pointed out Corky’s BBQ and told me that is where I had to stop and eat at if I wanted some good Q. After sweltering in the unforgiving Memphis sun at the zoo, I was tired and getting on the cranky side. I was also starving so when I seen Corky’s I decided to pull in, cool down, and get some Q. For more than a decade Don Pelts had been working in a BBQ restaurant but wanted his own restaurant ran the way he wanted it. In 1984 he dream finally came true and he has been running Corky's his way ever since. And more than 25 years later he is still packing them in. The meat is again dry rub and cooked ov...Read More

As I mentioned before, that when it came to dining plans I left it to my aunt to decide since she was a local for many years. And locals always know best. I just mentioned I had to have Memphis BBQ and I always visited a Hard Rock when there was one in town. After trotting all over town and hearing Jennifer telling us about the haunted history of Memphis we ended our tour where it started, on Beal St. So we didn’t have to walk far to get to the Hard Rock. Now I mentioned to someone one time I wondered why they didn’t have a Hard Rock in Charleston or Savannah and their reasoning was that the Hard Rocks were always in garish buildings. But that logic flies out the window since this historic...Read More

After visiting the wonderful and spectacular, Memphis Botanical Gardens, my aunt and I were starving. Since meal plans were up to her, she asked if Italian was ok. I am not one to turn down Italian, so I said sure. She said she had a great place to go that she used to visit all the time. We arrived late afternoon so the crowds had thinned out by now. We were seated and Barbara came right behind the hostess with 2 glasses of ice cold water and remarked we looked like we could use those while we perused. She took our drink order and told us she could give us a few minutes to look over the menu. You can start off with favorites such as calamari, breadsticks, or try something new s...Read More

Rendezvous

When I left everything up to Aunt Ellen to decide on the dining plans one of my two requests would be BBQ. After all I am a GRIT (girl raised in the south) and no self respecting GRIT would dare go to a southern town without paying her proper respects to the pit master. Especially when you’re visiting a city known for its Q. When making final plans, Aunt Ellen picked the Rendezvous our first night since it was across from our hotel. She said their BBQ ribs were legendary and we had to go. She also said it would be crowded so we needed to go about 6 o’clock to make it to our 8 pm curtain call at the Orpheum. Sounded good. Since 1948, locals, visitors, presidents, celebrities, an...Read More

We arrived at the Peabody to early to check in. We were allowed to check our luggage in and then go back out and enjoy Memphis. That was fine with us, since we weren’t planning on doing anything but slap down our luggage and maybe freshen up. We had several things we wanted to do before we had to get ready for Wicked. But first on our "to do" list was getting some food. Aunt Ellen suggests Huey’s since it was right around the corner. Since 1970’s the restaurant has been serving up great food to locals and visitors alike. Their menu is filled with comfort food and they brag about having some of the best burgers in town. And brag away, they may. You can start your meal off with f...Read More
