The little girl on the Egyptian Escalator shot me a gap-toothed smile and giggled. She had just caught me staring slightly open-mouthed at the opera singer-- that's right, opera singer-- that stood on the balcony hovering between Womenswear and Home Decoration. It seemed a little ridiculous. She was, after all, accompanied by canned music spewing at high volume from an Ipod dock. But then this was just the most recent in a long line of things that were more than a little ridiculous that I'd seen since ducking in off of Brompton Road. It had taken a moment to adjust to the smells of designer fragrances and new money that wafted through the air, and the sights of fluttering price tags an...Read More

Story/Tip

It was blazing hot in London, and I was walking with a purpose down the sidewalk, following a pair of hipsters who looked like they'd like to go to a covered market on a Sunday afternoon. I stopped to check my phone for the time when a shadow fell over my feet and a timid voice spoke. "Excuse me," it said, in an accent not unlike my own, "Do you know the way to Old Spitalfields Market?" I looked up and was surprised to see a mother and two daughters looking hopefully at me. "Actually," I replied, "I'm looking for it too." "Oh. We thought you were, you know, from here." I wished them luck and continued on my way. Half an hour later, as I was buying an incredi...Read More

I assume that most people go to Canterbury to see the Cathedral, and for good reason. As soon as I left the train station, I glued my eyes heavenward, scanning the brilliant blue sky for signs. With cursory glances at the utterly charming town of Canterbury, I followed the spire that had appeared above. I followed it through Christchurch Gate, where a young woman selling tickets smiled patiently at me as I did a wonderful "idiotic American" impression, having somehow told her that yes, I was a UK taxpayer. Once we were squared away, I breezed on, camera at the ready. There are not words to describe how I felt. It was like staring up at God himself. It's rather bizarre, act...Read More

Let's be completely honest, tourists aren't beating down the doors to get into Guildford, the county town of Surrey that's located about 25 miles south of London. Sure, it's been rated one of the top 10 places to live in the UK, but what is going to draw someone to visit? There's the Cathedral, which appeared in the movie The Omen, and pretty good shopping, and the headquarters of several video game companies (including my personal favorite, Lionhead Studios), and a castle. But what else is there for a tourist to do?That's a question I asked myself as I got out of my friend's doll-sized Nissan on a stunningly hot Tuesday morning. He was off to work in the Surrey Research Park, and I, b...Read More

On my first trip to London, I checked out The Original Tour and had a thoroughly acceptable time. Having done some research, I learned that The Big Bus Company had a slightly different, more comprehensive route that had stops very near to Waterloo station, where I was departing from that evening, and two places I really wanted to see-- Harrods and the V&A Museum. So I booked my thirty-dollar ticket.I caught the Blue line (buses with recorded commentary) between Waterloo and the London Eye at around 8:30 on a Sunday morning and headed up to the top deck. My first problem was with the audio track-- it was stunningly loud, even on the lowest setting, so I changed seats and settled in w...Read More
