When it comes to budget hotels, few can be better than Express by Holiday Inn, in terms of what you get for you money.Having stayed in Travelodges, Premier Inns and Days Inns also, my favourite has to be Express by Holiday Inn.The Dunfermline hotel is one of the newer ones in the popular chain, and since opening three years ago has won the InterContinental Hotels Group Torchbearer Award for excellence in 2007, 2008 and again this year.I have stayed at this hotel twice when visiting Scotland and throughly enjoyed my stay on both occasions.~~~~~~~~LOCATION~~~~~~~~Located 1.5 miles from Dunfermline town centre, the hotel occupies a quiet spot easily a...Read More

Hotel | "An Excellent Base for Exploring Northumberland"

I have recently returned from a short break in Northumberland and stayed at Purdy Lodge, which is a Travelodge/Premier Inn type hotel, next to a service area on the A1.~~~~~~~~~LOCATION~~~~~~~~~Purdy Lodge is located right next to the A1 at Adderstone Services, which is located at the turn off for Bamburgh on the A1.When travelling through Northumberland you cannot fail to miss the hotel. It is in a great position to use as a base to explore Northumberland, which is exactly what I did.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~BOOKING A ROOM~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I had passed the hotel many times, and often thought about staying there. I only live around an ho...Read More

Premier Inn Newcastle City Centre (Millennium Bridge)

Hotel | "A decent budget hotel"

Quote:
I was recently attending a concert in Newcastle with my partner and although we live not that far away from the centre of Newcastle, it still meant we would incur travelling costs there and back. The journey home would have to be via taxi due to the fact we had agreed to meet up with friends for a drink after the concert, which is also why we were leaving the car at home.So when I spotted Premier Inn offering hotel rooms at £29 per night, I decided to take a look and see if they had any available in Newcastle city centre. I thought at that price we could make a proper night of it and not have to worry about getting a taxi home and it also meant we didn't have to use public transport to get...Read More

Restaurant | "Lovely Carvery"

Quote:
I have visited a few Toby Carvery Restaurants in the UK and have never found any fault with any of them. And this one at Strathclyde Country Park, Motherwell in Scotland is no exception. It is very easy to find after exiting the M74 at junction 5, it is just off the big roundabout at the entrance to Strathclyde Country Park and adjacent to both Express by Holiday Inn and Innkeepers Lodge hotels.Indeed the reception desk for the Innkeepers Lodge is actually situated inside the Toby restaurant.Having visited here a few times now and always enjoyed both the food, service and surroundings I can highly recommend it.The restaurant itself is quite large and the seatin...Read More

Kielder Water and Forest Park

Attraction | "One Day Just Isn't Long Enough!"

Making the most of the lovely weather last weekend, I drove up to Kielder Water and Forest Park here in Northumberland. Fortunately this spectacular reservoir and forest isn't too far from where I live. It takes less than an hour to reach Kielder from Newcastle, so we didn't have to spend much of the glorious weather stuck in the car travelling.Kielder Water is northern Europe's largest man-made lake with a surface area of over 11 square kilometres and the forest is the largest in England. Therefore it may not be possible to see all Kielder has to offer in just one visit. I have visited several times over the years at different times of the year. It looks very picturesque in the winter tim...Read More
