As soon as we found Al Vecchio Stallo, we knew we had made a good choice. Our online searches had not brought up many recommendations for restaurants in Udine and, although we are quite happy to find places ourselves, we would only be in Udine for two nights and wanted to be sure of eating some good local food. This trattoria is situated in a quiet street not far from Udine’s main square but far enough away that the prices are reasonable. We had heard that it gets very busy so we arrived a little earlier than we usually would in order to be sure of a table. We were asked if we had a booking but it wasn’t a problem that we didn’t and we were offered a choice of sitting in the courtyard or ...Read More

The Italian city of Udine is situated in the region of Friuli-Venezia which is in the north east of the country. This region extends from the Adriatic and the gulf of Trieste to the lower reaches of the Julian Alps which extend into neighbouring Slovenia and Austria, the final throes of that mighty European chain.Just forty minutes away by bus (perhaps thirty by car), Udine is not just a good place to stay, but it’s also a realistic day trip from Trieste. It’s also about 40 kilometres from the Slovene border and could be reached easily as a day trip if you are staying in the west of Slovenia. The only thing I knew about Udine (apart from the fact that the football team ‘Udinese’...Read More

The main reason for wanting to visit Udine was to see the Tiepolo frescoes which are housed in several locations, but particularly those in the Palazzo Patriarcale (the Patriarchal Palace), which is now the Diocesan Museum and the seat of the Bishop of Udine. Attached to the palace building is the 18th century Church of Saint Anthony the Abbott; this can only be visited during special exhibitions.Giambattista Tiepolo was born in Venice and worked not only there but in Udine and also in Spain and Germany. He was best known for his frescoes painted in the high baroque style. Those in Tiepolo are among his earliest mature works. You enter the building through an arch in the centr...Read More

Restaurant | "Osteria Venerio - The Tastiest Snacks in Udine"

Osteria Venerio at Via Savorgnana 22, was one of the highlights of our short stay in Udine – perhaps even eclipsing the Tiepolo frescoes which I had long wanted to view! At first it looks like any of Udine’s bars and cafes but a closer look tells you this is not any old place. For want of a better description, Osteria Venerio is like an Italian version of a tapas (or more correctly a Catalonian pinxtos) bar. The extremely talented Maurizio makes all the tasty snacks himself and you choose from the selection displayed in the glass unit this is the counter. You might even see him making the delicious mini pizzas that are sold by the slice. Most customers drink wine and this is ser...Read More

Finding budget accommodation in the Italian city of Udine proved to be a long drawn out struggle. The tourism pages of the municipal website list the larger hotels but not cheaper accommodation like hostels, pensions and private rooms. They did, however, provide a pdf document which listed contact details for a handful of cheaper rooms. This wasn’t very detailed and only a few of the ones listed had websites. I sent off an email to those that had email addresses and weren’t too far from the centre and waited. Half of them bounced back, another was too expensive and another was full. Affittacamere Good Night responded, had availability and seemed to be a reasonable price. What’s more, they ...Read More
