A Night in the French Quarter

Quote: This journal chronicles our brief stay in New Orleans, and specifically, the French Quarter. As such, it's not intended to be an all-encompassing journal of New Orleans. There are many other worthwhile points of interest in New Orleans, such as the Garden District and the New Orleans Museum of Art to name a couple. But since our visit was so brief I'm concentrating on providing some detailed info on the tastes and sights we experienced in the French Quarter.

A Night in the French Quarter Best of IgoUgo

Overview

French Quarter, New Orleans, LA Photo - New Orleans, Louisiana

The French Quarter is what you make of it. If you are travelling with a group of six or more it may be a challenge to keep everyone together, since different people like different things (live music, shopping, drinking, to name a few). The Quarter offers some great window shopping, beer joints, oyster bars, and some of the best food anywhere. There are many art galleries, antique shops, clothing boutiques, etc., some, of course, better than others. And it's hard to have a bad meal here unless you are really trying to do it on the cheap. There are also more tourist traps and cheesy souvenir shops than you can count. For a change of pace, the Aquarium of the Americas, located in Woldenberg Ri...Read More

This hotel is adjacent to the Superdome and is located about a dozen blocks from the French Quarter. They offer Hyatt guests a free shuttle service to Harrah's Casino and the French Quarter that runs every 15-20 minutes until 12:45a.m. During peak hours (before or after dinner), however, there may be more people wanting a ride than the shuttle can accommodate, leaving you to your own devices (hoofing it or catching a cab) or waiting for the next one. Clean, small rooms, but thin walls. While the Hyatt is within walking distance of the French Quarter, I doubt a female travelling alone would want to make that trek after dark. We only stayed here because it was a function of business travel. A bet...Read More

What can I say about Nola? The word "spectacular" comes to mind for our dinner at the establishment of FoodTV icon Emeril Lagasse. Nola is expensive, but worth every penny. My girlfriend Chris said it all at the end of our dinner when she joked, "Every meal from now on is going to suck in comparison." After arriving for our 8:15 reservation, we selected a bottle of wine from the bar and waited for our table. After a brief wait, we were led to the elevator(!) in the center of the restaurant and to our table upstairs. I ordered the must-have Louisiana crab cake appetizer ($11) and the double-cut pork chop ($28); Chris had the gumbo for an appetizer ($6) and the cedar panel roasted redfish ($2...Read More

Quote:
Cafe Beignet is a welcome alternative for those of us who are turned off by the powdered sugar-choked air and huge crowds of Cafe du Monde. Cafe Beignet does, however, tend to draw a big crowd for the weekend breakfast hour, with the line spilling out onto the sidewalk. But with its courtyard dining area it is far less claustrophobic than Cafe du Monde, and the wait is well worth it. This tiny yet quintessential New Orleans style cafe, open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, offers the legendary beignets ($1.50 for 3) as well as traditional breakfast and lunch items. They also have a wine bar. Most breakfast and lunch selections are in the $6-$7 range. Place your order at the counter and wait for your...Read More

Cardinal Galleries (504.522.3615) is a welcome respite for art lovers from the tourist traps and debauchery of Bourbon Street. Come in and take a look at the wonderful figurative and more abstract works from the Italian painters (Bruno Paoli, Andrea Stella, Giampaolo Talani, and others) that this small gallery has in its stable. Take your time and observe closely the women Paoli paints (and the ever-present blurred or partially obscured male figure lurking in the background) and you slowly get sucked into his little world of psychological intrigue. And this artist, now in his late eighties, has an uncanny knack for making you believe he somehow knew exactly what his female subject was thinki...Read More

The Martin LaBorde Gallery (1.800.265.4986) is a great diversion from the hustle and bustle of the French Quarter. This gallery features the whimsical artwork of the award-winning Martin LaBorde. This artist has achieved some renown in recent years, and has among other things a CD jacket cover for the jazz ensemble Spyro Gyra to his credit. A recurring character in LaBorde’s paintings named Bodo the magician is depicted floating through ethereal landscapes with his feline and canine friends. And the titles of these works, such as "Bodo Saluted the Moon as he patted Big Ears" will crack you up as well.

Other local and national artists are also featured.

Pat O'Brien's Best of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Pat O’Briens"

Quote:
Yes, it's crowded. Yes, it's touristy. Yes, there are better mixed drinks to be had elsewhere. But Pat O'Brien's (504.525.4823) is still a cool place to relax and enjoy a frosty beverage. If it's not too hot outside and you can find a table, the patio bar is the place to be. If you're a tourist, it's almost required that you visit here.
