On my trip to Paris earlier this year I didn't have to go to the bother of finding a hotel because a colleague had already chosen for me. We wanted to be close the Rue du Rivoli and the hotel that was recommended by the agency we were visiting was the three-star Hotel Moliere.Paris is seldom cheap for hotels and this district is particularly pricy. Even so, we got single rooms at a price of €150 on a room only basis. I know what you are thinking – it's not exactly cheap but it could have been a lot worse. If you fancy staying here, do please shop around for the best price.~Getting There~I arrived at the airport and promptly got myself locked in the back of a taxi. T...Read More

Last week I arrived in Paris quite late in the evening (thanks to Air France and a taxi driver who locked me in the back of his cab – long story). I dropped my bag in my room and hurried to meet my colleague, Uwe, in the reception of our hotel. We were located very close to the Louvre which is an area he knows better than I do, and he'd already lined up one of his favourite restaurants, La Brasserie du Louvre. It was a five minute pleasant stroll to the restaurant which has an impressive location right next to the Louvre museum. The interior of the restaurant is very traditional in appearance. Most of the tables are arranged in front of bench-style banquette seating down one side with indiv...Read More

Hotel | "Disappointingly Dreary"

Writing a review of a really good hotel is easy and writing one about an awful hotel is fun. But how about hotels that are just a bit bleurgh - not great, not awful? Is it actually possible to write an interesting review of an uninteresting hotel? I'm still not sure about that. Sitting in my room at the Holiday Inn in Paris St Germain de Pres I couldn't help but reflect that the designers drew heavily from that area of the colour palette best characterised by the term 'nicotine'. This is a Holiday Inn that's badly in need of refurbishment and I was rather relieved to only be there for the one night. ~Location~It's about 20 miles from Charles de Gaulles airport but i...Read More

Hotel | "Ask Not for Whom the Bell Tolls"

Dijon is a difficult place to get to from almost anywhere else, except maybe Paris. If you want to get there from the UK, it's a nightmare. For a couple of years I had to go at least every couple of months, travelling from East Anglia and there was no easy way to get between where I was and where I needed to be. One option was drive to Stansted, fly to Paris, bus or taxi into central Paris, TGV to Dijon and the other option was to bite the bullet and drive the whole way. Surprisingly the drive didn't always seem the worst option and many times that's what I did. If I knew that the end of my long journey would be rewarded with a stay at the Sofitel La Cloche, then I drove with a lightness of heart and ...Read More

The first time I stayed at the Ibis in Dijon I nearly cried because it was just such a miserable horrible place. After that I always made sure to fill my suitcase with some home comforts to make my stay less unbearable. For several years I went regularly to Dijon, often driving for nearly 12 hours to get there and if I knew that I was booked in the Ibis, I drove with a heavy heart. Obviously I know that Ibis is a budget chain and I shouldn't expect much but in France Ibis has apparently developed the ability to give you the feeling that you are being punished for choosing to be so mean with your money. I do not know any other hotel chain or hotel (and in that I include $10 a night hovels in India) tha...Read More
