An April 2010 trip to Las Vegas by ch2001

We booked our flight and hotel as a package through Orbitz for just under $1200 - four night stay. The Signature at MGM Grand is composed of three residential condos. The sizes range from a studio to two bedroom units - all have stainless steel kitchenettes and large bathrooms with jacuzzi tubs. When we arrived the hotel did not have our reservation in the system. They called Orbitz on our behalf and it took an hour for the problem to be solved. The manager upgraded us to a one bedroom suite, gave us a $150 food credit for all MGM properties and waved the resort fees of $20 a day.Our room was huge! The first room had a full kitchen, a dining room table, a large living room,...Read More

We were supposed to be in Frankfurt the day we arrived in Las Vegas, so we thought a German restaurant would be the appropriate way to mourn our trip. The Hofbräuhaus is touristy, of course, but the atmosphere is exactly what you would expect in a German beer hall. Like everything in Vegas, the restaurant was enormous. Right inside the front door was a bar and a gift shop. The dining area was made of two large rooms. The first featured a mix of long wooden and round tables. At the far end was a stage with an Oompah band. The room was far too loud for us - the other room looked to be a patio outside, so we asked to sit there. It turned out to still be inside, but with a sky-painted ceiling, oop...Read More

MGM Grand Hotel & Casino

Attraction | "Great Classic Casino Atmosphere"

MGM Grand Hotel & Casino Photo, Las Vegas, Nevada
Quote:
The MGM Grand is one of my favorite casinos. The gaming floor is spacious and there are multiple groups of table games. There is a plethora of video slots and video poker. The minimum for most table games was $15 - sometimes $10. That's too much for me, so I settled down at one of the few video poker machines that also have Black Jack where you can bet as little as $.25!There are numerous restaurants - most are $20-$30. There are a couple Starbucks, a McDonald's, a Nathan's Hot Dog and a few other fast food spots. The drink service was not consistent - but once they notice you, you're set.Go to the MGM Grand if you don't want to be distracted by the over-the-top themes of...Read More

Mirage Hotel and Casino

Attraction | "Take that Eyjafjallajokul!"

Quote:
Vegas has changed a lot over the years - as the strip became more of a destination casinos added attractions on the strip to attract people. One such attraction is the Volcano at the Mirage. Every hour from dusk until 11:00 pm the volcano puts on a show with music, lights, water and fire - 12 foot tall flames!

Having had our European adventure canceled by a rogue volcano it was only fitting to squeeze in a trip to the Volcano at the Mirage.

Attraction | "The Berlin Wall in Vegas"

While touring old Vegas we stopped into Main Street Station Casino to see a site that you wouldn’t expect to see in Vegas. In the men's restroom, behind the urinals, is a section of the Berlin Wall – see, we got to see the Berlin Wall anyway, who needs to actually go to Berlin? The casino was quite pretty. Stained glass panels dotted the ceilings and beautiful chandeliers hung all throughout the gaming floor. The casino even has its own micro-brewery. You can grab a drink in the restaurant or from the bar right on the gaming floor. Since it was 11:00am we thought we’d stick to the bar. The beer was really good, and only set us back $1.50 a piece. If you’re visiting old Vega...Read More

Palace Station Hotel and Casino

Attraction | "$3 Black Jack!"

Palace Station Hotel and Casino Photo, Las Vegas, Nevada
Quote:
We went to the Palace Casino for one reason - $3 Black Jack. I’m not a big gambler and couldn’t stomach the idea of losing $15 on one hand of Black Jack, especially since the cab from the MGM Grand to Fremont Street cost $35 each way! So we settled up to one of the tables, cashed in $20 and played for about 30 minutes. I ended up leaving with a few dollars in winnings.

While the ambiance isn’t quite as spectacular as the big casinos on the strip, the Palace has its charm, so don’t overlook it.

The signs all around old Vegas advertise amazing $8 buffets with hundreds of delicious options – we just had to try one. Our guidebook said the Fremont Casino buffet was the best.Well, let’s just say you really do get what you pay for. There sure was a lot of food, but I wouldn’t call it delicious. Choices included sliced prime rib, pasta, pizza, soup, tacos and a large salad bar. With the exception of the salad bar, it was all pretty bland. Then came the dessert – there were six different pies and cakes, soft serve ice cream, bread pudding, cookies and brownies. We dove right in to the pies and cakes. We tried them all, and again, pretty bland.I’d give the mea...Read More

We had a food credit for the MGM Grand and partner hotels - including The Mirage. In an effort to stretch our dollar we decided on Fin - the average entree was $15.The restaurant was right off the gaming floor, but once inside it felt miles away. All throughout the restaurant columns of glass bulbs hung from the ceiling. We ordered wonton soup to start which was quite tasty. For our main dishes we ordered mongolian beef (a little bland) and the Sizzling Chicken & Chinese Sausage Clay pot, which was out of this world tasty! The waitstaff were attentive - I dropped some food on my shirt and without being asked a waiter brought me a warm wet towel to remove the stain....Read More

Attraction | "A Little France in the Desert"

Quote:
Continuing on our Europe via Vegas trip we had to visit the Paris Casino and Hotel. The Paris is my favorite casino - partly due to my obsession with all things French.Outside are remakes of the Arc de Triomphe, the Opera, and the Eiffel Tower - at night all are beautifully lit! Once inside you feel transported - to where, I'm not quite sure. The ceiling has painted sky, three feet of the Eiffel Tower come through the ceiling, and all around are tastefully arranged plants. Scattered among all this are multi-colored video slot machines. The main table gaming section is in the middle of the floor and is covered by a series of green metal awnings made to resemble similar structures in Pa...Read More

Le Village Buffet

Restaurant | "Best Buffet in Vegas"

Le Village Buffet Photo, Las Vegas, Nevada
Quote:
The buffet at the Paris Casino is rated over and over again as the best buffet in Las Vegas, so our expectations were high - it didn't disappoint. The cost for dinner is $24.95 a person plus tax. We purchased a discount ticket so the cost was $40 total for two.We started with crab legs and shrimp - by far the beat part of the buffet. There was a wide assortment of food to choose from - Italian, Asian, Mediterranean, and of course French. The bread and cheese was very tasty. Then there are the desserts - big variety, plentiful and delicious. Eclairs. Bread Pudding. Crème Brûlée. Macaroons. Brownies. Apple Crisp. And much, much more!If you want to try a buff...Read More

Eiffel Tower Experience at Paris Las Vegas

Attraction | "An Amazing View of the Strip"

Paris Las Vegas Hotel and Casino Photo, Las Vegas, Nevada
Quote:
Okay, I know what you are going to say..."Really? The Eiffel Tower in Paris? Did you really do that?" It's a must do in the evening. The cost is $15.50 per person, but nearly every Las Vegas tourism book has a buy one get one free coupon.

We went at 11:30pm and waited 10 minutes. Once at the top the view is amazing. Looking north and south along the strip all the massive hotels can be taken in at once. Time it right and you'll be up there when the Bellagio fountains go off.

Don't leave Las Vegas without doing this!

Buccaneer Bay Pirate Show

Attraction | "Not for Everyone..."

Quote:
So, I'm a pretty positive person, but this show was horrible - stupid story line, low brow humor, and inappropriate for anyone (especially children). I had heard the show was changed to target an older audience, but I was still shocked. One line was "I need a man to come in my cove".

This just wasn't for me. I realize that since it was free I really have no right to critique it, but I have to - it was that bad.

Bellagio

Hotel | "As Fancy As You Imagined"

Bellagio Photo, Las Vegas, Nevada
Quote:
Definitely one of the fancier Vegas casinos. The gaming floor is similar to those of some of the other newer casinos. The real magic is in the lobby. The colorful glass flower ceiling is awe inspiring and you'll have trouble looking away. To the rear of the lobby is the conservatory with thousands, if not millions, of plants and flowers. During our visit there were 15 foot tall ants, butterflies and snails surrounded by flowers of every imaginable color. While I cannot afford anything in the shops of the Bellagio, it was an entertaining walk. Especially the globes of flowers throughout the space. And of course, what trip to the Bellagio would be complete without a...Read More

Nobhill Tavern

Restaurant | "One of the Best Meals of My Life"

Nobhill Tavern Photo, Las Vegas, Nevada
Quote:
For our last night in Las Vegas we wanted a really good meal and decided on Nobhill Tavern in the MGM Grand. Entrees run around $30 to $40 dollars. We purchased a "buy one entree, get one free entree" coupon from Tix 4 Tonight, which is near the MGM Grand - $6 for the coupon. The wine list is massive - it had to have been 30 pages long. One bottle sold for $14,000 (yes, fourteen thousand dollars!). Not wanting to take out a home equity line of credit I settled on a cocktail. Well, settled isn't quite the correct word, as it was the best cocktail of my LIFE! It was called the Cable Car and consisted of Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum, Orange Curacao, fresh Sweet and Sour and simple syrup s...Read More

Cirque Du Soleil-KA

Cirque Du Soleil-KA Photo, Las Vegas, Nevada
Quote:
These days, no trip to Vegas is complete with out seeing a Cirque du Soleil show. At the time of our visit, Ka was playing at the MGM Grand, and as a guest we received a 40% discount on tickets – who could pass that up?This was our first Cirque show and I had mixed feelings going in. I thought it was visually stunning, from the special effects to the extremely talented actors. As for the storyline, it was a bit hard to follow – I read that this was the first Cirque show to incorporate a strong storyline, and with no words and multiple simultaneous storylines the show was choppy. Definitely read the plot summary before you go. Wikipedia has a great description, and don’t worr...Read More
