Quote: Our trip to Antigua was a little bit of paradise! We researched the best things to do and places to eat on the island, and we had a wonderful time!

Our week in Antigua

Overview

Quote:
Shirley Heights party on Sunday night! Get there early and eat a BBQ dinner as the sun sets over English Harbour- wow!

Be sure to get OUT of the resort and explore the island's many historical sites and sample the wonderful food!

Quick Tips:

BRING LOTS OF SUNSCREEN! Also, bring some sunburn relief aloe gel, because you probably will get burned at least once.

SKIP the horseback riding on Dickinson Bay. It is unsafe and a waste of money. Go to the big stable near Falmouth Harbor instead.

Best Way To Get Around:

We used taxis for our trips and were not disappointed. Some people rent cars, but we just had a problem with driving on the other side of the road!

We stayed in the Time Share Rooms, which were OK. The room was very clean, although it was a little spartan in decor. We had a small stove, refrigerator, and a microwave. All cooking pans and utensils were provided, but I did bring a measuring cup! We had a wonderful baclony with a view of the beach! (Other timeshare rooms were bigger than ours.)

The resort has an all-inclusive package, which we didn't purchase. I heard mixed reviews on the food from other guests, but we did enjoy the bar service.

Although we didn't stay here, we did the timeshare porspect tour and were very satisfied with the resort. We looked at studio condos, which had a king bed, couch, kitchen, bathroom and a large patio. The kitchen was much nicer than ours at the Rex, and the stove and refrigerator were full size. There was also an oven. All cooking pots and utensils were provided, too.

The beach here was pretty nice, but there have been 2 hurricanes since then, so it has certainly changed.

Best Things Nearby:Dickinson Bay beach, several restaurantsBest Things About the Resort:The bed was very comfortable, and they actually gave us more than one pillow.Resort Experience:The room we had was pretty Spartan. It was basically a hotel unit with a kitchen. Luckily, I had the forethought to bring a measuring cup because there was not one in the cabinet! It had a microwave and a single-burner stove, and a good-sized fridge. We wished that we had been offered a partial-inclusive plan at the hotel because it got old to have to pay for drinks. We heard form other guests that the meals served were all buffets and were only OK, so we were happy to walk ...Read More

Home Restaurant

Restaurant | "HOME"

Quote:
Home was our favorite restaurant on Antigua! It is run by a native Antiguan who returned after living in New York City for many years. The restaurant itself is his boyhood home! It is very popular with locals and tourists alike, so reservations are a must. The menu is on a chalkboard and is always changing. The gumbo is excellent, as is the curry. We had a wonderful time, and the service was just perfect.

Miller's By the Sea

Restaurant

Miller's is a fun place to spend an evening. They have a lounge-type singer that entertains during dinner. The food was pretty good: I had pasta and my husband had steak. They will pick you up for free if you call in advance, which was a plus for us!

Our guide picked us up at the hotel in the morning, and we didn't return until late afternoon. This was our favorite day on Antigua! He drove us all over the island in a nice 4x4 and we got to see all of the island's historical and natural sights. We spent an hour at Half Moon Bay just climbing on the rocks and watching the big Atlantic waves. My husband especially loved the old British forts. Lunch was local BBQ at a family-run restaurant, and it was delicious. We recommend this tour to everyone!

Shirley Heights Lookout Bar and Restaurant

Restaurant | "Shirley Heights"

Quote:
On Sunday nights, the whole island comes to Shirley Heights for the party. There is a steel drum band and BBQ dinner in the early evening, and then at dark, the reggae band starts playing. The sunset is so beautiful, especially after a few rum punches! DO NOT drive yourself here, especially if you are planning to drink a little. The roads are very winding, and they are not well-marked.
