While we had spent a little time wandering the outer courtyards of City Hall building we saved the tour of the interior for last. And I do mean last, this was the very last thing we did before catching a bus for the airport. Tours are frequent and are available in English at regular intervals but you should check the schedule as it changed by day of the week. We arrived somewhat early and spent a little more time admiring the view of the city across the water and looking at memorials and plaques honoring important Swedes. When the tour finally commenced, we were able to drop our backpacks and coats off at the large coat check facility. The City Hall is also an events center,...Read More

Daytrip to Uppsala

Uppsala is a great and easy daytrip from Stockholm. It's only about an hour away by train and since it's a regional train the tickets aren't too expensive. After spending three full days in Stockholm, we were ready to get out and see something new so we ventured to the train station in the morning and used one of the automated ticket machines to book round trip tickets to Uppsala.Back in the day Uppsala was where all the Swedish kings and queens were crowned. Today it's a (mostly) quiet university town, with a medieval charm. When we arrived the only things on our to-see list were the cathedral where kings had been crowned for centuries and the castle. We're suckers for a good castle....Read More

In reading about Stockholm in guide books we heard over and over that we should experience the city by water. When we went to see about departure times for a boat tour, we learned that it wouldn't be so easy. Harbor tours leave multiple times a day during the summer months. You will also have your choice of boat in the summer. We were experiencing Sweden in March, however and this meant that there was one boat tour, once a week with the good ship "Stockholm." This proved plenty to accomodate Stockholm's off-season tourists. We paid for a regular ticket though for about $30US you could enjoy an all-you-can-eat brunch while we cruised. The food looked good. Since the boat tour was only...Read More

Gosh Darned Beautiful Stockholm

Our first day in Stockholm began rather inauspiciously. We were wandering around with few goals in mind. It was March, which is a volatile month for weather and today was proving to be no exception. After a quick bakery breakfast we spent some time wandering around the old town. Many churches and other tourist attractions were still closed to tourists for the winter but there was still plenty of Swedish scenery to ensure a nice morning. The old town is a small part of Stockholm and by afternoon we had set our sights further afield. We began to wander in what was supposed to be the direction of some interesting museums. This was where we began to go wrong. We would have ...Read More

This was the absolute highlight of my trip to Stockholm. I am a total sucker for ships in museums so this attraction was right up my alley. We made our way over the museum after breakfast one morning and we wound up spending quite a few hours here. This is an absolutely can't-miss-it attraction in Stockholm. It's also great for when the weather is cold and damp.Be sure to bring an international student ID if you want to reap the discount for admission. The Vasa sunk when she was barely out of port on her maiden voyage and was rather recently recovered from the bottom of the harbor where the unique properties of the water protected her from decay. As such, she's a unique a...Read More
