Every time I return back to the good ol' USA for some travelling - either in new places I've never been, or in states I haven't been to for years, I am reminded of how amazing a country that it is, and how fantastic it is to travel. Being away in the wide world, it can be easy to forget how great it really is. Either by being surrounded by the often misinformed and opinionated foreign view point, or by simply being awash in the enormity of choices of amazing, exotic places to see in the world. The list in the back of my mind (and yes, written in every travel journal I've ever had) of where I want to go, what I want to see and do - is filled with options from the US, but always...Read More

There are a lot of great places you can go in the states - even in Arizona to get a 'great American hamburger.' You should even attempt the fast food places if you're new to the states, as you'll quickly see what a difference there is in American fast food, and the kind you find overseas. However - I can't possibly review my trip out west and my time in Arizona with out mentioning Red Robin. This, too, is a chain restaurant - and one that is becoming more and more well known across the country. It's not got the local charm you may be looking for in your search for a real American cheeseburger, but it does have some of the tastiest burgers I've ever had. I also th...Read More

Buffalo Wild Wings is, in fact, a chain restaurant that any one in the states or who's travelled around the states may be familiar with. And though the fact that my first experience of this restaurant was in Arizona - thus lending it a little bit of preference and sentimentality - there is still something about visiting a great beer and hot wings place in Arizona, that makes the trip that little bit more complete. As I've written in other reviews in this journal - Surprise is a great little town that can easily make you fall in love with the idea of living in Arizona. It may not be the most exciting or event-filled place you will go in a state filled with unbelievable scenery and outdoo...Read More

Surprise, It's Just That

Story/Tip

There's a great little town just north of Phoenix that is great for more than just the name - but then, you have to feel kindly disposed towards any place that refers to itself as 'Surprise.' I wasn't sure I wanted to do a review just of Surprise - as it's more of a jumping off point where travellers are concerned, and for me was encompassed largely in a visit to a very old friend from my old Texas days. However - it seemed wrong not to mention it at all, as it turned out to be such a positive aspect of my first Arizona experience. And when I remember my time in the states on my last West Coast travels, I always specifically remember Surprise with a subtle fondness. ...Read More

You can't visit the south west with out getting a good sample (or 3) of excellent Mexican food. For those not fully initiated with the cuisine, Mexican food is extraordinarily different depending on where you have it. It's a phenomenon I've never quite come to grips with. No matter where you go in the world - or what state you are in, every good Mexican restaurant claims to have a chef 'from Mexico' and often so are the staff. And yet, every country and every state presents the food differently - and none of these are what you would find it you went to eat in actual Mexico. As any Texan will quickly tell you (often with up-turned nose) the food you get in the other states isn't 're...Read More

Ok, so yes, there is more to Arizona than the Grand Canyon. A whole lot more, in fact every visit I've made has moved it higher up the list of one of my favourite places I've ever visited. And I fear that the fact that the Grand Canyon has been touted as being so 'grand' and that it's so often listed as a place you 'must go' that people tend to gloss over what it really is. I think it begins to fall somewhere in amongst Disney Land and Hoover Dam for places you need to stop and see, especially for family trips. Even I am guilty of this, and I love canyons. When we planned our trip to Arizona - the thinking about the visit to the grandest of canyons fell somewhere along the lines ...Read More
