With or without a car, British Columbia’s extensive and reasonably-priced bus-and-ferry network makes it easy to see most of Vancouver Island, plus the ‘Sunshine Coast’ along the mainland north of Vancouver proper. ‘What it’s like’ depends on the itinerary you choose; B.C. Ferries has a fleet of about 40 ships to select from.
Vancouver’s principal ferry terminals are Tsawassen, about an hour’s bus ride south of the city, and Horseshoe Bay, 30-40 minutes north. The port for Victoria, Swartz Bay, also requires highway travel. However, through bus connections are available between the two downtowns; be sure to ask for a through ticket.
