Westend City Hostel

We chose this hostel for its proximity to the Westbahnhof, where we would be departing from at the end of our stay. Also for the good rates. We stayed in a mixed 12 bed dorm. It was clean and as quiet as a room with twelve people could be. There were two bathrooms for the dorm, one inside the room, the other in the hallway. The whole hostel was very clean. The linens on the beds were of good quality and very clean. The blankets were very warm, which I appreciated as it was very cold outside. One thing that I liked was the reading lights on each of the beds, it reduced people coming in late and turning on the overhead lights. Lockers were provided free of charge. They were less than...Read More

Bregenz and Lake Konstanz

Water Stage in Bregenz Photo, Bregenz, Austria

On our winter Austrian tour, we had Lake Constance on our list of places to see. For those who haven't heard of it, it's situated on the borders of Austria, Germany and Switzerland. We tried and did not succeed in finding affordable lodging in Konstanz, our preferred destination. So we wound up with a day to spend in Bregenz. For the most part, Bregenz is a quiet Austrian town. It is prettily situated on lake Constance, with views over the lake. One of the most unique features of the town is a stage that is actually built on the water. This was featured, to my delight, in the most recent James Bond movie. Bregenz, of all places, getting a James Bond shout out! Anyway, there were n...Read More

From Feldkirch to Vaduz on Foot

Several days after Christmas we arrived in Feldkirch, somewhat disappointed that there wasn't any snow on the ground in the town. We shouldn't have worried too much. We had several days to kill and Vaduz was tantalizingly close. I knew there were public busses that ran several times a day from the main bus terminal in Feldkirch but we'd hit on some gorgeous winter weather and decided we'd walk a bit before hopping a bus.It turns out that there are sidewalks the entire way from Feldkich to Vaduz. And that it's a spectacular walk with absolutely incredible views. The entire walk took us about 3 hours, though we weren't trying to set any kind of speed record. We basically just followed...Read More

Christmas Day in Vienna

Spending the days leading up to Christmas in Vienna was a no-brainer. There are Christmas markets, pretty lights and all manner of things to do. Christmas day itself, however, seemed to pose a challenge. If you are at all familiar with Austria, you know that on Sundays and holidays, everything shuts down. Even grocery stores are closed. Knowing this, we tried to plan a day that wouldn’t rely on opening hours. We started the day with some pastry we’d stockpiled from the day before, and then we set out to Stefansplatz for Christmas mass in the beautiful Stefansdom cathedral. We aren’t Catholic and not especially religious but this seemed like it would be a must-do and apparently many ot...Read More

Advent in Vienna

In spite of, or perhaps due to, the fact that Vienna becomes pitch dark by 4:30pm in the month of December, there’s a lot to do all day long and the short days are hardly a deterrent to anyone looking to have a festive Christmas season in Vienna. Maximizing the limited daylight is important though and we made a real effort to get out with the sun in the morning so we could get some good pictures of all the landmarks before the sun went down.It does mean that visiting Vienna over the advent season is a totally different experience than visiting in the summer when the days drag out well into the evening and everything is bursting with life. Fortunately, the Viennese are determined not to l...Read More
