We went to Occidental during DC Restaurant Week. They were offering a 3-course meal for a very good price. It was our First time visit tio this restaurant. When we arrived we were welcomed by a friendly lady. She took our coats and guided us to our table. Occidental is a small restaurant with a good warm atmosphere. This restaurant is located next to the Willard Hotel. The walls are completely covered with photos with famous and important people who visited Occidental in the past. Our table was a little bit at the small size for four people. Our waiter told us what the specials were, but we wanted to take the advantage of the 3-course meal. We ordered two bottles of wine, one red and one white. I hav...Read More

I live almost two years in the Washington area and had never been to the Pentagon Memorial. Until a few weeks ago. I had some family over from The Netherlands en they wanted to see this memorial as well. We drove to the Pentagon Mall, where we parked our car. It was raining at that time. We shopped and walked through the mall. When the rain stopped, we walked from the mall to the Pentagon Memorial. It easy to find and it’s a From the moment you step into the grounds of the Pentagon, you’re not allowed to take pictures. You’ll have to wait till you’re inside the memorial, where you are permitted to take pictures. We talked during our walk to the memorial, but from the moment we got to the e...Read More

Imagine, you’re on vacation in Washington DC and your favorite artist is going to perform at the Verizon Center. Don’t hesitate, just go. We went to a concert of Keith Urban a few days ago. Let me share my experience with you. It was my first visit at the Verizon Center and didn’t know what to expect. The Verizon Center has a great accessibility. If you're taking the metro or driving, both ways is easy to get there! We took the subway and it’s just a 5 minute walk to the venue. When we got there, we had to show our ticket and went in the building. It was easy to find our section and seats. We were in section 112, row R and had seat number 19 and 20. The stage was close, so I was totally happy. It depe...Read More

I live in the Washington DC area. I visited Arlington Cemetery many times, but never on the fourth of July. We had some guests that weekend and we all decided to go to Arlington Cemetery. We took the metro. The station entrance is a 5 minute walk from the main entrance of the cemetery. I knew there were be flags in front of every grave. For over 40 years now, The Old Guard has honored America's fallen heroes by placing the American flags at every gravestone. That must be very impressive and I wanted it to see with my own eyes! We took the metro to Arlington Cemetery.Walking through the cemetery gets me every time. But this time I got goose-bumps. Near every tombstone was a small American f...Read More

Great for concertsEvery year in the summer months, there are several concerts at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow. A great opportunity to visit a concert if you are staying in the Washington DC area. The venue is a pavilion and only open in the summer months. Several artists are performing here. For example; last year there was Rihanna, Sugarland, Rascal Flatts and Tim McGraw. The last two performers are coming again this year (2011). Every visit we parked without any problem. There are many spots available. There were plenty of tailgaters with BBQ and drinks as well. After parking our car we walked to the venue (we’re no tailgaters). Outside the venue, but within the fences (after the checkpoin...Read More

I live in Great Falls, Va. It’s a privilege to live that close to this amazing beautiful park. I visit the park frequently to get in touch with nature. There are two sights you can visit. The Maryland side or the Virginia side. The falls separate Virginia from Maryland. On the Maryland side you have the Billy Goat Trail. It can be tough to walk this trail, because the further you go the more you’ll have to climb over and around giant rocks. Sometimes you’ll have to use yours hands to climb and don’t be afraid of heights. Make sure you have good shoes. It's fantastic exercise with amazing views of the falls and Potomac. It’s definitely not a stroll in the woods. If you want a more easy stro...Read More

I visited Shenandoah National Park twice in October last year. The fall is a beautiful time of the year to spend some time in the park. The trees are changing and a pallet of colors are visible. It is absolutely gorgeous! Both times we did the Skyline Drive. You have several lookouts on the way, which provide an amazing view over the Shenandoah Mountains. It’s great to stop at a scenic overlook that seem to be more beautiful than the last. You can see the Blue Ridge Mountains. Appreciate and enjoy the beauty surrounding you. Along the drive you will find different hiking trails. Some of them are tough, but information about the trails can be found at the beginning of the path. One hiking trail did lea...Read More

The Cherry Blossom Festival is one of the major festivals in Washington DC. Because of this fact, I went to the blossoms three times. One time before the blossom peak, a second visit during the blossom peak and my third visit was after the blossom peak. Three different ways to see these beautiful trees along the Tidal Basis. Let me tell you about my first visit. It was on a Saturday and I decided to see the Cherry Blossoms in Washington DC. I live in Great Falls, so I parked my car at the metro station of Falls Church. It’s free to park your car in the weekends. From there I took the metro to Smithsonian station. This station is close to the Cherry Blossoms and the Washington Monument. I walked direc...Read More

This monument is located at Ohio Drive along the Tidal Basin in Washington DC. After a walk from the Washington Monument to the Jefferson Memorial, we decided to visit the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial. This period is perfect to visit this place. The nice temperature and the blooming Cherry lossoms made it a nice getaway from the huzzle and buzzle of Washington DC. It’s a very large place; it’s one of the city largest memorials and there are several statues and waterfalls. It’s a serene spot and there are benches everywhere. You can sit down and admire the statues or you can enjoy the sound of the waterfalls. It’s very relaxing. This site has large blocks of stones and in between you’l...Read More

Since we live near Washington DC, we decided to go to the annual Chinese New Year parade. You have to go early if you want a good view of the parade. We came a little bit late, so we didn’t have a good view of the street. It was very crowded and people had been waiting for hours. We picked a spot where we thougt we can see a glimp of the parade. The parade itself was very short and it was a little dissapointment for us. I thought it would be more gracious and longer. But the most fun part was after the parade, when they stopped for the stage. We were at the very end of the street where the parade ended. On that stage was a Chinese delegation and some VIP’s I guess. While it was the end of the parade, ...Read More

I went on a photo safari with a friend. Since I moved to the Washington area it was time to explore more of this great city. We picked the Union Station as our subject. The style of the Union Station beaux-art and it was opened in 1908. The building has high ceilings and marble floors. Union Station has a main hall, with a 96-foot barrel-vaulted ceiling, white-marble flooring, and a balcony with sculptures of Roman icons. The main hall is impressive and very spacious. As a photographer, you can take wonderful shots of the ceiling, the people who are waiting and the beautiful details you see around you. Here we spend the most time of our trip.
