Our first visit opened on series of highs. We were escorted through the pleasant dining room to our choice of tables by a window overlooking the grand cliffs of Zion. After the waitress recommended a less expensive dish over my first choice, we followed her advice and started with the smoked trout appetizer, which exceeded her effusive praise. This dish ranks in the top small handful of really great foods we have encountered on our travels on four continents. Wonderful smoked trout is served on bed of spinach with ripe olives and aioli, accompanied by toasted pita points, a wonderful blend of flavors. This is a must. The elk, buffalo, and beef-tenderloin meatloaf holds its own against al...Read More

If you follow the recommended itinerary, you will arrive in Zion National Park from the east on super scenic Ut Rt 9. In a bad year, we visit Zion NP 2-3 times. In a good year, more than three. We stop at Zion on our way to Las Vegas. We stop at Zion on our way home from Vegas. We stop at Zion on our way to California. We stop at Zion on our way to the Grand Canyon, going home from the Grand Canyon, and sometimes we visit just because its been a couple months since we have been there. Each visit, we try to repeat our favorite hikes in the park, and explore something new. Trouble is, each new exploration becomes a favorite to be repeated next time. Zion has five distinct...Read More

The Hurricane Super 8 is a basic motel. It meets the needs, but only adequately. Still, for $35 (Christmas, 2008), breakfast included, can you go wrong?Rooms are nice sized, with a table and two chairs, TV, a coffee maker two beds, and separate bathroom and sink areas. The AC/Heat unit is on the quiet side. Lighting is good. The curtains are good. The included breakfast is minimal but OK, great if you like waffles, offering waffles, cereal, juice, toast, tea, and coffee. The strongest points of the Super 8 Hurricane are it's location and price. The location is a couple miles off I-15 in southern Utah in the center of the town of Hurricane, on a side street one block off Main...Read More

Sol Foods Restaurant is our favorite place at Zion for lunch and breakfast. Located just steps from the park entrance, this semi-cafeteria serves buffalo burgers for only $1 more than a hamburger. A buffalo burger is one of the best ways to try buffalo meat. Buffalo is the healthiest meat there is, with even less fat, calories, and cholesterol than skinless chicken breast, so when we come across one of those rare places in the West that serves buffalo, it is a must-have, alntohug morl efor its taste that for its health properties. . Because of its low fat content, buffalo is a very dry meat that requires something to moisturize it, like catsup, mustard, and a slice of tomato. Do not omit condiments. ...Read More

The last time this happened was in 2005, a once-in-century event. Mid-winter of 2005 was unusually wet across the desert southwest. This produced rarely seen but spectacular results in the spring– a remarkable outburst of wild flowers and brining to life many of the intermittent waterfalls in Zion National Park.
