Quote: Bhimbetka is 40 kms south west (opposite direction of Sanchi) from Bhopal. Both Sanchi and Bhimbetka can be done in a single day trip. (If you are based in Bhopal that is)

The best way to get there is to hire a car / taxi from Bhopal and drive there. While roads of Madhya Pradesh are not the best, the road leading from the highway upto the Bhimbetka site is great and extremely scenic.

First, there's a railway crossing and on the other side, the road climbs up like a creeper. It is just wide enough for a four wheeler to just fit in.

At the bottom, just at the railway crossing, there is a restaurant but one has to book in advance.

A World Heritage Site, the rock shelters of Bhimbetka are considered to be anywhere between 30,000 to 100,000 years old. There are markings, paintings, drawings, etc on the stone walls of the caves which vividly depict stories from the past.

The natural shapes of the rocks, the outcrops, the silhouettes against the setting sun, etc all provide dramatic visuals to the tourist.

You will need a guide as some of the stuff needs explanations to really appreciate.

Have fun.
