Attraction | "So Much Art We Needed a Guide"

Vatican Museums Photo, Rome, Italy
Quote:
The Vatican Museums are so vast and so stuffed with art, both great and terrible, it is hard to get value out of a visit by wandering pointlessly and unfortunately, there are no helpful written signs by the multitude of works. You can buy an audio guide, but we have found that a personally guided tour helps to tailor the visit to our interests and also provides an opportunity to interact with a knowledgeable local. We had really enjoyed the Context Rome tour of the Vatican Museums before but were unable to book with them this time. Instead, we booked with the Institute of Design and Culture and were given a tour by one of IDC’s founders, Dr. Laura Fusche. IDC describes their tours as cours...Read More

Ristorante Filippo La Mantia

Restaurant | "Innovative Sicilian Cuisine"

Ristorante Filippo La Mantia Photo, Rome, Italy
Quote:
Ristorante Filippo La Mantia is in Hotel Majestic near Palazzo Barberini. That should have given us a clue that the place was going to be upscale. The chef had previously been at Trattoria, a very contemporary designed restaurant near the Pantheon. That restaurant felt more geared towards young people, but the current restaurant, in a posh hotel, feels a bit more staid, luxurious, elegant but not so funky. Although we caught a glimpse of the kitchen as we entered the dining room and there’s a big terrace looking out onto Via Veneto, so it does not feel stuffy. We felt a little underdressed as we walked along the carpeted steps to the restaurant on the upper floor and sat under a huge crysta...Read More

Restaurant | "Outstanding Food"

Our last dinner in Rome was at the three Michelin starred La Pergola restaurant considered by many to be the best restaurant in Rome. When you make a reservation, they inform you that the dress is "formal" and men must wear jackets although ties are not mandatory. No description of what we women must wear. It was a great excuse to buy some clothes anyhow, particularly, for my daughter who only had jeans with her.The restaurant is located in Rome Cavaleri hotel, formerly a Hilton, now a Waldorf Astoria hotel. We took a taxi because the location is a fair distance and uphill from the central historical part of Rome. Take care in giving the taxi driver directions, because there’s also a pizz...Read More

Attraction | "Must Visit for Every Art Lover"

Borghese Gallery and Museum (Galleria Borghese) Photo, Rome, Italy
Quote:
The Galleria Borghese is a must see for any art lover. The Gallery has a number of significant Caravaggio paintings, although from February to June 2010 many are in the special exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale on loan from the Borghese. His Madonna and Child with St. Anne, also known as the Madonna de Palafrenieri was still on display but his David with the Head of Goliath, and John the Baptist were not. Despite the missing Caravaggios, a trip to the Borghese is still essential to visit in order to see Bernini’s sculptures, Aeneas and Anchises, Rape of Proserpine, Apollo and Daphne, David, and Bust of Cardinal Scipione Borghese. The genius of Bernini is on such showy display in tho...Read More

Attraction | "Fantastic Wine Tasting Experience"

Vino Roma Photo, Rome, Italy
Quote:
Vino Roma offers wine tastings of Italian wines by sommelier Hande Leimer in her home located in a lovely old Roman mansion near the Tiber River. She offers small group tastings of a variety of wines from all over Italy. We tried the tasting called My Italians – the Big Ones.Hande started with an introduction to some basic rules about wine tasting after which we started evaluating every wine. For two hours, we tried seven great Italian wines, all from different regions and with different characteristics, getting an overview of Italian wines. The emphasis in this tasting was on wines that are a notch or two better than everyday wines. We discussed colours, alcohol level, and the aromas, to ...Read More

Hotel | "Ideal for our Mother Daughter Stay"

Hotel Teatro Pace 33 Photo, Rome, Italy
Quote:
This hotel has an unbeatable central location near Piazza Navona. We stayed for six nights in the room described as the triple deluxe, one double bed and a single in an upper loggia. What we didn’t realize was the single is in its own small room up a flight of stairs with its own door and bathroom. The separation gave us more privacy and sound proofing which we really appreciated. It’s on the top floor up 94 steps. It has a small terrace which it shares with the junior suite separated by a bit of wood lattice work. Weather was comfortable enough we could sit out and drink coffee or enjoy a glass of wine. We had a gorgeous view of Sant’Agnese in Agone from the bedroom window and terrace....Read More
