On Sunday after our usual fantastic breakfast, we headed out so that I could visit another church that is part of my genealogy. St Mary the Virgin Church in West Walton, Norfolk is the one was I interested in. It is amazing how a village can be so difficult to get to but this one is. It is just across the River Nene from Newton in the Isle Cambridgeshire where my grandmother was born and as the crow flies is probably well under 5 miles. As the car drives however is another story. The church itself is architecturally interesting. The tower is separate from the church. These were both built in the 12th century and it is "one of the most elegant early Gothic structures in England", accordin...Read More

We have always eaten at the Bulls Neck Pub when we stay at Lesley’s. It has changed owners a few times the food was consistently good. We were saddened to find out that it is now open but not really serving the quality of food we demand. We of course counted on Lesley and John to give us some recommendations. One that they both recommended was The Thatched Cottage. It is a pub and restaurant in the small Lincolnshire village of Sutterton. You might find yourself in Sutterton as the Romans and Normans did before you. This area is part of what is known as the Fens and the church in Sutterton, St Mary the Virgin has the tallest crocketed spire in England. The church dates from the 12th century and the...Read More

For us, there is only one place that we stay when we are going to this area, Pipwell Manor in Saracens Head. We have stayed with John and Lesley many times and we feel very at home here. Little did we know how close we came to having this reservation cancelled on us. Lesley had been hospitalized and if John knew my phone number I am sure that we would have had to go somewhere else. As it was, they know us enough to know we are very easy to deal with and the last time we stayed here Al was sick one day and Lesley fixed us a little dinner tray so that we didn’t have to do out. When I tell you that nothing was at all missing in our stay, I am not exaggerating. We were welcomed with tea and ca...Read More

We arrived in London a little after 7pm on Wednesday evening January 13th. We went through customs and got our luggage in the new terminal 5 at Heathrow, what a huge terminal that was. It is very open but distances are long and you now need to take transportation within the terminal to get to your bags, it reminded me of Atlanta’s airport. As we looked for an ATM I realized just how tired I really was. I tried to withdraw some cash and was rejected. You can imagine the gut wrench that this caused. Luckily I was able to purchase a tube ticket with my credit card.Soon we were heading into London. It is a longish trip on the tube but we had seats so it went well. We were staying at the Best ...Read More

Do we ever have a trip that goes off without a hitch? It seems that the answer to that very obvious question is no. We were scheduled to fly out of Boston Ma. On Sunday January 10th going to London to begin our almost three week vacation. On Saturday morning January 9th I was checking my emails, right before my Internet went down to see what was happening when I noticed some emails from British Airways. I assumed it was the email that said you will be flying tomorrow, well it wasn’t. It said your flight has been canceled. I almost passed out. It seems that the weather was so bad that all flights into London were not able to land. Well that threw a wrench into our plans. Especially since my flight had ...Read More
