As stated and shown in another part of this journal, we had a breathtaking view of Arenal Volcano from our resort, Los Lagos. Then we took a zipline canopy tour where we saw the other side of the volcano and could hear the rocks tumbling out of the volcano, charging down the sides of the volcano, with white gas and steam pouring out the top. What a view!

Arenal Volcano, one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world, is a fascinating natural wonder and a must-see destination for most travelers to Costa Rica.

Just WOW! Where else can you stay at the base of an active volcano in lush surroundings, in your own little casita facing a volcano. What an experience! Even better than the large, well-appointed cabin, was the veranda with table and two chairs, with a perfect view of the volcano. Along with all the expected amenities of a high class resort, Los Lagos also has beautiful walking trails, a butterfly pavillion, waterfalls, and a crocodile farm. This is a place we'd like to return to someday.

Tortuguero National Park

We ventured into remote Tortuguero by boat in torrential rain. In the open-sided, high speed boat, throwing spray high into the air, we were cold and drenched by the time we arrived at the Pachira Lodge. Expecting more tropical, though at times wet weather, we were grateful we had thrown in a light windbreaker at the last moment. We wondered if we'd enjoy our short, soggy trip to Tortuguero. We were not disappointed. The lush surroundings of Tortuguero were teaming with monkeys, sloths, iguanas, exotic birds, and tropical flora. Here we saw wildlife and nature unsurpassed in beauty and wonder. Our visit to Tortuguero was one awesome, never-to-be-forgotten experience, a lasti...Read More

Our little lodge at the Pachira Lodge was fairly large, with a great hot shower, and rocking chairs outside our door. The many windows had bug screens and grates, but no glass. The lush grounds were teaming with monkeys, sloths, iguanas, exotic birds, and tropical flora.

Meals are more than adequate, all inclusive, and served buffet-style. On-site tours of the tiny village of Tortuguero, the canals, and a walking tour to see flora and fauna are all included.

Our stay at Pachira Lodge was an experience of a lifetime.

Hotel Britannia

Hotel | "Mixed Review"

Built in 1910, the Britannia Hotel in San Jose, Costa Rica is a colonial delight of white columns, yellow exterior, chandelier gracing the lobby. That said, the hotel is located in the old and dirty downtown San Jose. We were warned about the area not being safe and the hotel had an armed guard at the entrance 24 hours a day. We stayed at the Britannia both when we arrived in Costa Rica, and again prior to departure. Our first room was an oversized room with lots of room and a separate seating area. Our second room was a tiny, barely maneuverable room next to the elevator, behind the front desk. What a difference between the two rooms! Breakfast was included, but not very good: fresh fruit, a ...Read More
