I went to university in Lancaster and spent many a day wandering around the beautiful Williamson Park. Located at the top of a hill on the edge of the city, it is dominated by the Ashton Memorial, and is home to a number of attractions including a butterfly house and a ‘birds and beasts enclosure’. Whether you want to enjoy the acres of grassy and wooded areas or marvel at the creatures that live there, you’ll find that Williamson Park offers a fun day out for all the family. On a summer’s day (without a doubt the best time to visit the park), you can wander along the many paths, admiring the waterfalls and planted areas in relative peace and quiet. There are large grassy areas where you c...Read More

South Lakes Wild Animal Park

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Wild and Educational!"

Quote:
As the name suggests, the South Lakes Wild Animal Park is a collection of some of your favourite animals house in a park that allows the majority of its inhabitants to wander freely. The focus is very much on conservation and there is a lot of information about work that the park does to help animals in the wild. Not to be confused with a zoo, there is hardly a fence in sight, the park has obviously made a huge effort to provide as natural an environment as is possible in this country. The South Lakes Wild Animal Park is located at the Southern tip of the Lake District in Dalton-In-Furness. To get there, you need to take the M6 to junction 36 and follow the signs for Barrow-In-Furness until...Read More

Attraction | "A Surprisingly Interesting Museum"

I'm always looking for quirky things to do on my days off, because I'm not one of these people who can just sit around and do nothing. Much of my research starts on t'internet, as we say Up North, and the other day I stumbled across the website for the Bolton Museum, Aquarium and Art Gallery (http://www.boltonmuseums.org.uk). Bolton isn't far from were I live so when I noticed that it's free to enter, we decided to pay a visit and I'm pleased to say that I'm glad I did. The Bolton Museum is in the town centre on Le Mans Crescent (behind the town hall) and is conveniently located next to a multi-story car park and just opposite the bus station. The museum and aquarium are in the same buildi...Read More

Isle of Wight Zoo

Attraction | "The Star of TV's Tiger Island"

Isle of Wight Zoo Photo, Isle of Wight, England

I really like the Isle of Wight Zoo in Sandown. It is quite small compared to many other zoos in the UK, but the animals they have inside more than make up for it. Let's face it, when people go to the zoo, they want to see lions and tigers, which is what this zoo has plenty of - hence it being the basis for ITV's Tiger Island programme. The enclosures for the animals seem to be more than adequate and the animals are clearly very well looked after. The zoo as a whole is very well laid out and easy to get round, giving you the chance to see all the animals without going round in circles. Like I said, the main attraction is the fantastic tigers, but you can also see the engaging m...Read More

Knowsley Safari Park

Attraction | "On Safari in the UK"

Knowsley Safari Park Photo, Liverpool, England
Quote:
Knowsley Safari Park is probably the closest thing you’re going to get to a genuine safari park in the UK. It’s by no means an accurate representation of the natural habitats of the animals there (for a start it rains more here than in Africa!), but it makes for a fun and educational day out and is better presented than a traditional zoo.*Where Is It?*Knowsley is located just outside Liverpool and is easily accessible from the M62, you just need to follow the brown safari signs (which, incidentally, makes a fun game for restless children!). When you get there, follow the entry signs for cars and you’ll arrive at a drive-thru ticket desk.*How Much Is It?*...Read More
