Snorkelling in The Maldives is something which until last year was new to me. Although I had been to the islands several times previously, due to a medical condition I was not able to participate with the family on those occasions. So what follows is a beginner’s guide to what I feel to be the most salient points to bear in mind if you are a novice. Many people who have never snorkelled before, and have no intention to do so, find themselves drawn to the possibility when they witness the vast underwater world these islands have to offer. My first piece of advice is to begin to plan before you go. This is important if you are a novice because there are two types of islands on offe...Read More

The Maldives are a chain of islands in the Indian Ocean which are one of the most beautiful destinations you can select, if you want to find peace and tranquillity. It may come as a surprise to many that not all of the resorts are accessible only to the rich and famous; there are a few islands in the chain which are able to offer holidays which are affordable, yet still have many of the delights offered by the most upmarket of islands. Flights to the Maldives are in excess of £600, so you have to bear this in mind when you look at prices. It is also much cheaper to go off season, which is June and early July in particular, before the school holidays force the prices up. The seasons in The ...Read More

This was the place we went to for our silver wedding and I can't say anything which is less than superb. Having landed in Male, the capital of the Maldives, the journey begins to paradise. The island is reached by sea plane from Male, and this journey itself is a lifetime experience. A bare footed pilot flies you over a turquoise ocean, jewelled with a myriad of tiny islands. You land near to a small jetty and are transferred by boat to the island which appears before you, beckoning you to step ashore. When you do so you are met by the staff and given a lovely drink served in a coconut, and then you are shown to your room. Vilamendhoo Island is in the South Ari At...Read More

When you land at Male International Airport in the Maldives on a passenger jet your journey is only just beginning, as access to the islands is then onwards by boat, or by sea plane. In general The Maldivian Air Taxi Company will be your most likely provider if you are travelling onwards to one of more than 30 resorts. These sea planes take off and land just a few minutes away from the main airport, and the journey is by minibus to where the air terminal awaits you and is quite an experience in itself. There are also blue and white sea planes called The Trans Maldivian Airways who fly to some other islands. A bustling humid and rather noisy departure lounge affords views out to...Read More

We booked a holiday to the Maldives with Kuoni for July 2009, and chose to stay at Biyadhoo Island which is in the South Male Atoll. The flight time varies, but non stop you are looking at 11 hours or so. There are all levels of accommodation in the Maldives ranging from luxury to basic, and we are not Mr and Mrs wealthy and we go for the place, not the pampering, and so for the last 3 years have spent many hours researching how to go on a budget, but still get to experience all the delights of this tropical paradise. The most important thing to realise if you want to visit these islands is that the flight is the expense, and it is something which you can never redu...Read More
