During a weekend in the fall we headed to central florida to visit some family. On Saturday which had a super clear fall sky, we decided to take a day-trip to "Middleofnowhere" Florida (also known as Ona). It took us about 1 hour to drive there from the town were we were staying and we seriously passed about 3 cars there and 2 cars back + 1 half carcass of roadkill. Our treck led us to Solomon's Castle, a strange place to say the least - but a castle none the less, all made of recycled materials. Recognized on the BBC, PBS, CNN, The Wall Street Journal, and HGTV, this place is an interesting day trip and a good time of chuckles, funny pictures, and eye-rolls. When we pulled up ...Read More

On Saturday evening we were invited to attend a dinner hosted by an online online community for food-lovers, food-bloggers, and food-makers. I wasn't an official member of this group, but was invited by fellow-blogger and friend, and we were very excited to join the rest of the group in a night of fun, new friends, and lots of food.We were already spending the weekend with my family in central Florida, and so the drive to the Orlando area was an easy jaunt up I-4. We arrived at the Swan & Dolphin Resort in the Disney area, and after finding our way around, made it to the restaurant with a lot of anticipation and healthy appetites. I'd purposefully tried not to snack throughout the day ...Read More

Two of Walt Disney World's most popular resorts are actually next door and onthe same property. The Swan and Dolphin are quite amazing exteriors to see, both designed by the esteemed architect Michael Graves. The Dolphin opened in 1990 and has been a prime resort for tourists galore ever since. The main feature of the Dolphin's exterior is the unique green triangular tower standing over 250ft tall. Walk ways leading up to the resort on all sides are lined with palms and carefully manicured gardens and fountains. Many decorative pieces from mosaic tile to concrete stature pay homage to the hotel's named mammal. Located just outside the Disney Boardwalk, an open shopping and resta...Read More

Each year during May there is a gathering of artists, visitors, day-trippers and locals alike in Lakeland, Florida. Usually landing on the weekend of Mother's Day, the Mayfaire is a city tradition taking place now for almost 40 years. Located in Lakeland, the city that sits almost exactly in the center of the Florida penensula...one aptly named for its landscape which is dotted by numerous lakes. In the historic downtown area, Lake Morton is a jewel to visit on any day...a lake filled with ducks, geese, and swans (some which were gifted from England, including the rare black swan). This lake is 1-mile in diameter and an easy stroll. During the Mayfaire though, the entire area explodes with...Read More

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

Although themeparks normally aren't my favorite places to visit, one of them that I do enjoy every now and then is Busch Gardens. There are two Busch Gardens in the nation - one in Williamsburg, VA and one in Tampa Bay, FL. Both are very differently themed, but both packed with great coasters and animals. The one I visited most recently was the Tampa Bay location, which is a 335acre African themed park. Originally opened in 1959 as a manufacturing plant of the Anheuser-Busch brewing company. The company offered free tours of the grounds and free beer tastings. Through the years it evolved to a full tropical garden complete with exotic animals, rides, roller coasters, entertainment venues, s...Read More
