Restaurant | "Home of the "Original" Mojito"

If you're in Havana, chances are you'll see lots of evidence of one of the city's most famous bars. La Bodeguita del Medio is an iconic little restaurant in the old part of the city very near to the main cathedral. The famous yellow sign and ramshackle street are characterized in paintings, posters, prints, and greeting cards all around the markets and souvenir shops.Open since 1942, and claiming to be the home of the tasty cocktail, the Mojito, many people just stop in for a taste of the "original" tropical drink. The bar is in the front section and is quite a small space with only an "L"-shaped bar top with a handful of stools. The wooden counter is lined with rows of mojitos which sell ...Read More

Hotel | "Cuba's Most Famous Hotel"

Hotel Nacional de Cuba Photo, Havana, Cuba
Quote:
Unarguably the most famous hotel in Cuba is the Hotel Nacional de Cuba along the Malecon waterfront in Havana. Designed by architects from NYC and opening in 1930, this hotel has historically been the "it" place for famous and non-famous people alike. With unparalleled luxury in this city, the Hotel Nacional still draws people from around the world. From the grand driveway at the entrance, one can see this will be an impressive place. Old cars line the drive, ready to be rented for a luxurious drive around the city. From the first glimpse inside, the sense of historic and lingering luxury from times past is strong. The lobby is adorned with wood beamed ceilings and beautiful sconces on the ...Read More

Hotel | "Old Irish Palace. Now a Hotel"

During almost a week in Havana, we made Hotel Palacio O'Farrill home. With a smaller room base, friendly staff, onsite cafe, and convinient location, the O'Farrill is a good place to lay your head. Featuring only 38 rooms, this hotel is a nice size for a stylish, yet quaint stay. This old former mansion from an Irish noble family was recently renovated and boasts an impressive open lobby with floors of colorful marbled staircases overlooking an airy cafe. The front office and lobby is through a large heavy wooden door, which when opened from the dark street, makes one feel like you've entered to another world. There is a high stained glass ceiling above the courtyard and at the busy hours, ...Read More

Attraction | "Chocolate in Old Havana"

An unexpected treat down one of the main pedestrian streets in Old Havana is the lovely Chocolate Museum. The design and layout is inspired by a chocolate shop in Belgium and here one can learn a bit about the history of cacao as well as sample plenty of tastes.Although it's called a museum, it seems more like a chocolate cafe and bar of sorts and the pieces of collections are in small glass cases and frames along the walls more as decoration. Very colonial in decor, the mint-colored walls and dark wooden furniture make it feel more like a museum of fine trinkets instead of one of the world's best desserts. There are artifacts from centuries past displaying the history of the bean and conf...Read More

Hotel | "Art Nouveau and Jewish Influence"

Quote:
One of the beautiful hotels in "Habana Vieja", the old section of Cuba's capital city, is the Hotel Raquel. Just take a glance at the detailed architecture of the exterior or step into the stunning lobby to know that there is something special about this place. There's usually a very friendly host to welcome you to the hotel, and as you walk inside take a minute to take in the Art Nouveau style. The lobby is full of columned open spaces with high ceiling, soft colors and marble statues. Built in the early 1900s, there is an almost French feel to the interior, and a very romantic atmosphere. One of the most beautiful pieces in the building is the colorful stained glass ceiling to the open at...Read More
