Everyone knows the North Pole as being the home of Santa Claus. The North Pole conjures up images of a magical wonderland covered in snow while elves work nonstop throughout the year for that one special day, Christmas. Although most places only celebrate Christmas one time a year, it is always Christmas in Santa Claus, Indiana. Santa Claus is a small town of 2000 people located in southern Indiana, about fifty miles from Evansville. The town welcomes visitors all year long as Christmas is more than just a holiday. The question that is always asked is how did the town acquire its name? Although many different stories exist, there is only one held to be true. In 1856, the town applie...Read More

Kringle Place Shopping Center is a strip mall located in the center of town. On one end is the town’s only grocery store, Holiday Foods, which has been there since the 1950’s and the other end is the town’s famous post office. The Santa Claus Post Office is a fully functional post office and the only one in the world bearing the name of Santa Claus. When the post office opened up, it received tens of thousands of letters from around the world. Many people just wanted the famous Santa Claus postmark. The postmark changes every year as one is selected from a contest held every year from the local high school. Because of the enormous amount of mail received every year, the US Postal Service declared...Read More

Santa’s Candy Castle is Santa Claus, Indiana’s first themed attraction. Although the town acquired its name in 1856, it was still largely unnoticed. Then in the 1930’s, people started to come to Santa Claus, hoping to capitalize on the name. One of those people was Milton Harris. He had a vision of creating a Santa Claus Town where he hoped to bring the magical allure of the North Pole to Indiana. He wanted a place where Christmas would be celebrated every day. He set out buying land and was successful in securing sponsorship from toy manufactures and candy companies, most notably, The Curtiss Candy Company, makers of Baby Ruth and Butterfinger. The first building in Santa Claus Tow...Read More

For those wanting to see a piece of history, look no further than Lincoln City, a mere few miles from Santa Claus on State Road 162. As the name implies, it is named for Abraham Lincoln. Although Lincoln was born in Kentucky and lived his adult life in Illinois, Indiana lays claim to the fact that Lincoln grew up here. The Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial is the biggest attraction here and is one of three national parks located in the state. The main entrance to the Lincoln Memorial is on State Road 162. The first stop is at the Visitor Center, where there is a gift shop, museum exhibits, and a brief film on the life of Lincoln. The park is open year round, except for Thanksgiving, ...Read More

In 1946, Louis Koch opened up Holiday World, the country’s first themed amusement park. Disneyland wouldn’t open up for another nine years. The park has 47 rides including four roller coasters. The park is divided into four different areas named for holidays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and the 4th of July. General admission is $41 and that includes entry to both parks, free unlimited soft drinks, free sunscreen, and free parking. The Christmas section is at the front entrance to the park. The rides are primarily geared toward children and are named after Santa’s reindeer. There are rides such as Comet’s Rockets, Dasher’s Seahorses, and Blitzen’s airplanes. The ...Read More
