Sopron: Hungarian Charm at the gates of Vienna

A July 2001 trip to Sopron by Overlander

Quote: Sopron (pron.: "SHOW-prawn") offers visitors a delightful taste of Hungary all of a half-hour's drive from Vienna. Sad to say, Sopron gets very few visitors from Western countries other than Austria or Germany. In three days there, we ran into but a handful of English speakers, and they were all British. No Americans, Canadians, Australians, or whatever. This is unfortunate considering how close it is to Vienna.

A small city, Sopron's best feature is its Old Town, which is a wonderful place to stroll, especially in early evening. There are lots of sidewalk cafes, restaurants, and bars to keep you well fed and watered, as well as quite a number of museums and churches to go through. All in all, it's definitely worth two or three days' time, especially if you have a car to get out to some of the lovely spots outside of town.Quick Tips: Sopron is just a stone's throw from Vienna. Catch a train from the Südbahnhof and you'll be there within about 40 minutes. Since there is no longer a visa requirement for Hungary for anyone with a Western passport, it wouldn't be a bad place to stay while you're visi...Read More

At first glance, the Hotel Sopron seems a bit faux modern, an attempt at a 5-star that barely meets 4-star standards -- in appearance anyway. And there is a hint of ex-Socialist Europe about the design. However, the staff and the restaurant more than make up for these short-comings. Rooms are equipped with the usual amenities: mini-bar, satellite TV, telephone with direct-dial international facilities, and a comfortable bath. Our particular room was a fairly small twin; there are no doubt other larger rooms available at a somewhat higher price, of course. But while ours wasn't the most wonderful in the world, the service we received was first-rate. Everyone bent over backwards to...Read More

The Hotel Sopron's main restaurant was a whole lot better than what my wife and I expected. Although the place seemed like cookie-cutter 4-star, the food turned out to be quite impressive, assuming you stick to Hungarian fare. These people know their way around the kitchen, so it's hard to miss if you keep to the local cuisine. Trying the "international" menu items can be sort of catch-as-catch-can in terms of quality. I'm making a generalization here, since we did not experiment in this particular restaurant. In any event, the service was excellent, the waiters were attentive but not obsequious; they knew when they were needed and when they weren't without being asked. They even lit my...Read More

We passed this restaurant numerous times on our way to and from our hotel, and only ate here once on the night before we left for Vienna and Washington (DC). We wished we had checked it out earlier because the food was even better than the hotel's, but for at least 30% less money. Service was a trifle slow, but there was only one waitress for the entire restaurant, so this was excusable. There's no English and only just a little German; fortunately, they did have a German menu, so I was okay on that score. However, even if you just pointed to something, you'd no doubt get something great. We sat at a table on the cobbled patio, if that's the right word for the narrow exter...Read More
