Quote: The Neptune Festival 2009(Sept. 25th-Sept.27th) was an unexpected treat to start off our fall week at the beach with a bang! The festival brought artists, craftsmen, artisans and chefs together for a 2 mile long festival of food, fun and crafts.

Each sand sculpture is unique, exquisitely and tediously crafted and able to stand up to wind and rain for some time. We werent there while they were being created but I would love to see this process. I'm sure each piece of art has a story special to its creator. Here is a sampling of the some of the best.

Although I usually research and select the restaurants on vacation, hubby insisted on this one and said he had read several great reviews. After a week of seafood he longed for a juicy steak. "Salacia" (named after Neptune's wife) is located above Catch 31 in the Hilton Hotel located near the Neptune Statue on 31st and is touted for their world class selection of bovine delights. You enter though a separate door of the Hilton but actually have to transverse thru the interior of "Catch 31" ( a decidedly more casual restaurant) to enter Salacia. Reservations are recommended (especially if you want to eat on the lovely terrace that overlooks the sea). After much ado about o...Read More

We just couldnt resist at least once on our visit to try a popular, water-front tourist and local hot spot right on the beach . Since Mahi-Mah had some good reviews and looked impressive from the Boardwalk we decided to give it a whirl. It is impressive if you are merely interested in kick-ass, expensive beach-bum type drinks, loud music, lots of singles action and mediocre food that sounds exciting but really isnt. Our prime interest always food and service and this place came up short on both. When you walk in, the place appears HUGE and there are lots of (empty) tables everywhere...you are still given a beeper and told there is a 15-30 minute wait. Okay-lets head to ...Read More

Virginia Beach truly outdoes itself with this family-friendly, dog-friendly, all-age group friendly event. We fell in love with Virginia Beach because of its beauty, its peacefullness, its lack of commercialism, idyllic weather and great restaurants. This festival added another layer to that that we were thrilled to be a part of! Starting in Friday- sand sculpture artists from around the world set up shop on beach around 6th street and went to town- the results are mind-boggling! (see separate review).Vendors, craftsmen, artists and artisans from all over the country set up tents on Saturday to show off and ply their wares. It is a juried show so the quality of offerings was first ...Read More

Lynnhaven Fish House

We decided to take a leisurely drive away from the beachfront resort restuarants at Va.Beach and headed to Lynnhaven Fish House because it included Soft Shell Crabs on its menu. My husband adores these and will go to any lengths to obtain them...IF they are GOOD ones. Using the gps we easily found the waterfront restaurant perched on a pier beckoning to us. We were a little dismayed to read that the parking lot was shared by the fishing/tackle shop next door and there appeared to be bad blood between the two establishments. Pretty tough when you share a building! After walking inside a rather rustic, old-fashioned, your parents kind of fish-house (we passed through 2 check-in stations) we were seat...Read More

We stumbled on it...literally..as we do some of our favorite places. I have to admit when we walked in the door at 7:00 pm and only one table was filled, I was a little apprehensive. But oh well- we'll have drinks and hors d'oerves and be on our way. What an understatement! We loved the friendly and genuinely attentive waiters,we loved the food , we loved the location. But mostly we loved THE FOOD!Located on the ground floor of the newly refurbished Hampton Inn(next to the Hilton) Timbuktu has an outdoor patio and indoor seating. Being early in the evening, with cool beach breezes we chose inside. We still had a dazzling view of the ocean!I started with a nice Reisling from the a...Read More

We exchanged our modest studio condo (RCI) in Atlantic City for this one bedroom spot in Virginia Beach for the weekend of the Neptune Festival. I consider that we made a fair trade- while small, Ocean Sands was adequate for our needs. Our biggest complaint was its absence of a balcony. From my perspective it was the only resort on the Boardwalk(with undoubtedly the MOST beautiful views of the beach) that did not have balconies! I would have enjoyed that immensely as my pics from window(we watched dolphins playing in the waves on several mornings while having breakfast) would have been unimpeded by the glare from window. We received notice that the building is being renovated and would...Read More
